We developed CK, CE, and CA series of tilting pad
thrust bearings to meet customers’ unique
requirements. They are available with a broad range
of design features such as flooded lubrication or
directed lubrication, point contact pivot or line
contact pivot, center pivoted pads or offset pivoted
pads, Cu-Cr backed pads or lead-free Babbitt pads,
hydrostatic jacking or not, and so on. All are
designed to optimize performance and meet the
unique requirements of different turbo machinery.
The CE series compact equalizing tilting pad thrust
bearings and CK non-equalizing tilting pad thrust
bearings are of similar size and offer unprecedented
choice and flexibility to machine builders. We could
provide special design for customer to reduce
power losses, oil flow and pad temperatures, and
address industry-wide issues such as axial
vibration.
For more details please refer to catalog of CA,CE
and CK series tilting pad thrust bearings.

Applications: Pumps, Motors, Compressors,

Turbines, Generators and Gearboxes.
Description
2 Design Features

CE series compact equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings, developed by SUND, is a new design based on CK CE series compact equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings are mainly include the following components: thrust
series non-equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings adding a set of leveling elements. The pads are pads, base ring, upper and lower leveling plates, positioning screws (or nozzles) and adjusting plate
interchangeable between CE and CK series bearings. With its modular design, CE series compact equalizing (spacers). Find Figure 2 and 3 below for the specific structure.
tilting pad thrust bearings has the interchangeability with other ranges of bearings, can be used to replace
bearings on existing machines.
SUND’s CE series compact tilting pad thrust bearings are designed to evenly transmit axial shaft load into the
foundation or machine support of rotating apparatus by the hydrodynamic oil film generated between thrust
collar and tilting thrust pads. Working surface touch each other only at the instant of start up and shut down.
Otherwise, these surfaces are separated by the fluid film, so surface wear is minimal. CE series compact
tilting pad thrust bearings are mainly used in high/medium speed and high/medium load applications such as
compressors, gearboxes, turbines and pump, etc.
With its self-aligning ability and the self-equalizing of pads, the equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings allow
certain degree of misalignment on shaft and bearings housing. When there is uneven load between pads due
to machining or installation deviation, the equalizing structure of bearings could adjust the load between pads
so as to achieve even temperature distribution between pads. Therefore, compared with CK series non-
equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings, CE series bearings, with higher load capacity, are more applicable for
high speed and heavy load application.
SUND’s CE series compact equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings offers many operating advantages,
01 including: 02
◆Higher load capacity
◆Superior damping characteristics and ability of absorbing shock force
◆Longer lifetime: life span equal to that of the machine
◆Versatility in application Figure 2 CE Series compact Equalizing Tilting Pad Thrust Bearings
◆Self-equalizing
CE series compact equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings has the advantages of simple, compact and
interchangeability. The thrust pads are optimized to suitable for different sizes of bearings housing to bear
different loads. Figure 1 shows the typical specification of thrust pads, including 8-pad and 11-pad design.

2.3 Adjusting Plates (Spacers)

03 Adjusting plates (spacers), made of ordinary carbon steel, are used to adjust the axial clearance of bearings 04
The standard thrust pads are with line contact pivots, in which supporting lines are machined on the back of
thrust pads to mate with bearings shell. This design provides a small contact area, thus the contact face is or the position of rotor. Usually there are three options for customers:

minimized so as to eliminate wear. An oil wedge is formed when thrust pad tilts an angle (about 1/2000) at the ●Adjusting plates (with machining allowance)

direction of rotation, then hydrodynamic oil film is generated. The spherical pivot, made of hardened high ●Adjusting plates (with machining allowance) + spacers

strength steel, is another option for customer, which allows thrust pads to tilt in any direction to form ●Adjusting plates (finished to thickness) + spacers

optimized hydrodynamic oil film, thus increase load capacity. Sizes of 0.125mm and 0.25mm are available for adjusting plates, with range of 1mm
Center pivoted pads and offset pivoted pads are available (as shown in figure 5), center pivoted thrust pads (3×0.25mm+2×0.125mm). Find section 4 for more details. Figure 7 shows the location of adjusting plates and

2.4 Lubrication

CE series equalizing thrust bearings can be supplied in flooded lubrication and directed lubrication, shown in
3 Reference Codes
Figure 7. Flooded lubrication, with simple design, is mainly applied to low speed rotating machines. It is a
simple, effective and reliable lubrication and cooling method. Directed lubrication is suitable for high speed
and heavy load application, which effectively increases load capacity, reduces power loss and bearings CE
temperature. For high rotating speed machines (especially when speed of thrust collar exceeds 50m/s),
directed lubrication is recommend to reduce the churning loss of rotating elements (like thrust collar). 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

5 Selection Guide
5.3 Lubrication and Cooling

5.3.1 Oil inlets, Outlets and Drains

The positions of oil inlets and outlets in flooded lubricated slide bearings can vary greatly, however there are

5.1 Basic inputs for Bearings Selection【Find Enquiry Data Sheet for details】 some rules that must be observed when seceding this:
①The oil outlet should be positioned directly in the top of the bearings housing ensuring that the bearings is

For proper selection of bearings, it is necessary at least to provide the following basic input information: fully submerged and that there is no air trapped;

① Shaft diameter and collar size ②Adequate sealing is to be provided at either end of the shaft to maintain a full head of oil;

② Shaft speed and rotating direction ③The oil inlet should be positioned so that the oil is fed to the inside diameter of the thrust pads to allow the

③ Thrust load-in details (normal, at start-up, maximum) pumping action of the collar face to force this cool oil over the pad face;
④Position the oil inlet so that when the machine is shut down the oil will not drain back out of the bearings

housing, the oil should be maintained at least up to the underside of the shaft;
⑤ Lubricant information, oil inlet temperature and oil inlet pressure
⑤On high speed arrangements each thrust assembly should have its own inlet and outlet, this reduces power
⑥ Drawing of rotor or other bearings relative drawings like drawing of housing
loss due to reduced oil churn;
⑥It is recommended to use oil inlet to control the oil flow, the diameters of oil inlet and outlet are reasonably
designed to ensure an inlet velocity of 1.2-1.8m/s and an outlet velocity of 1.8-2.4m/s. On high speed
application it may be necessary to provide additional inlets to deliver the required amount of cool oil.
5.2 Calculation Reports and Confirmation Drains should be sized to keep the maximum oil flow speed below 0.15 m/s. It is very important in the
bearings housing design to ensure that the outgoing oil can fall freely away from the oil inlet without risk of oil

tangential direction, to avoid the oil be blocked in the bearings housing. The diameter of nozzle between pads
is designed on the base of the oil flow under 0.5bar pressure. If more oil flow is needed, e.g. for high speed
application, the outside oil paths should be adjusted to make sure the pressure at oil inlet is 1bar. For lower
speed the pressure can be 0.25bar.

5.4 Axial Clearance and Adjustment

Axial clearance, or end play, is the distance the thrust collar can be moved between the bearings during
installation. Axial clearance is not an exact dimension. The shaft’s maximum axial clearance is limited to the
smallest clearance between stationary and rotating machine elements, while the shaft’s minimum axial
clearance must be sufficient to prevent excessive power loss in the unloaded thrust bearings. Any time a
double thrust bearings is installed, axial clearance must be provided to allow for an oil film to form in each
bearings, and thermal expansion of the bearings elements.
Filler plates (or shims) are used most often to set both the axial clearance and the axial position of the
rotating elements. Use the figures in table 2 and the equation shown below for recommended nominal axial
clearance.
F1+F2=BC-(H1+H2+X+EP)
While the total filler dimension (F1+F2) is easily determined, the individual thickness dimensions F1 and F2
must be selected to position the shaft collar for proper spacing of the stationary and rotating machine
elements. Figure 10 shows the detailed structure for setting end play, and find tables in section 4.3 for the
recommended values.

5.5 Temperature Measurement

By measuring the bearings surface temperature, very close to the oil film, one can determine if the bearings is
operating properly. As per our experience, it is recommended to measure the temperature when:
●Bearings loading exceeds 2.8Mpa
●Collar surface speed exceeds 76m/s
●Inlet oil temperature exceeds 50℃
●Specifications limit maximum allowable temperature
All measurements were recommended to be taken at the 75/75 position( The sensor is located 75% of the pad
length in the direction of rotation from the leading edge, and the 75% of the pad width measured radially

outward from the pad’s inner diameter), as indicated Figure 14. Alarm settings should be set to 8℃ above
normal or expected values and trip settings 7℃ above alarm. In no case should the maximum trip temperature
be above 120℃. 6.1 Spherical Pivot
If the temperature exceeds 120℃ , you may be able to reduce it to a more acceptable level by changing pad
backing material (chrome-copper), lubrication method (directed lubrication) or pad pivot style (offset pivot), Spherical pivot, made of hardened high strength steel, allows tilting in any direction, which generates

A common alternative to steel backed pads is a chrome-copper backing. Chrome-copper has an excellent

thermal conductivity, which makes it very effective in removing heat from the Babbitt. This property allows
where steel backed pads run too hot, e.g. high speed, high load. Chrome-copper is also used to keep thermal
deformation low so as to increase load capacity. 7.1 Cleanliness of Lubricant
Chrome-copper has relatively higher mechanical strength and hardness under ambient temperature and
temperature below 400℃ . With the properties like very good electrical and thermal conductivity, excellent It is critical that the oil supply pipes and bearings housing are perfectly clean, free from dirt or metal particles.

heavy load, thus to improve the safety and reliability of bearings.
Chrome-copper backed pads faced with Babbitt typically will reduce the pad surface temperature by 5~20℃.

7.2 Lubricant Supply Pressure

The recommended oil flow mainly depends on the specific structure and operating conditions of bearings. For
lower speeds, less flow is required and, since pressure is proportional to flow, less pressure is required at the
bearings. The required pressure at the bearings is 0.25 atmosphere for flows at the low speed, 0.5
atmosphere at mediate speed, and 1.0 atmosphere at high speed application. Each orifice can be sized to
according to the system supply pressure and the oil flow requirement for each bearings.

are based on recommended flow values to the loaded bearings.

6.3 Hydrostatic Jacking 7.4 Maximum Shaft Speed

It is difficult to set a rule of thumb on maximum speed because of many factors that affect the limits. The

collar and thrust bearings, so that wear is eliminated and friction torque becomes negligible.
Always ensure on double thrust arrangements that the axial clearance is correct. This is done by moving the
collar hard against one of the thrust faces then using feeler gauges measure behind the thrust ring of the
opposite thrust ring. A feeler gage is generally used to measure the axial clearance.
7.6 Alignment Enquiry Data Sheet for SUND Slide Bearings

It is critical to obtain correct bearings alignment to maximize the operation safety margin. The working faces
of the thrust collar must be flat and parallel and at true right angles to the shaft axis.
This can be checked during manufacture and if the collar is combined with the shaft no additional checks
