• It expands superiorly into the flattened iliac wing or ala, which gives rise to muscular
attachments.
• The ala has inferior, anterior, and posterior gluteal lines that mark its surface and form the
fascia between the attachments of the gluteal muscles.
• Medially, there is a sacropelvic surface and an iliac fossa (the latter of which is filled by
the iliacus muscle).
• The sacropelvic surface lies below and behind the iliac fossa, separated from it by a
ridge.
• The sacral portion bears the irregular L-shaped auricular surface for articulation with the
sacrum at the sacro-iliac joint.
