Design and Analysis of a Floor of a Bus Body (/w/2bnz/design-and-analysis-of-

a-floor-of-a-bus-body) 

Overview:

The aim of the project was to re-design the existing floor of a bus body to perform static analysis and to check for the scope of optimization for Andhra Pradesh State
Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) which is the state-owned government organization for road transportation in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The optimization
was carried out on the C-Channel Cross-Bearers which are subjected to loads due to passengers, seats mounted onto the floor as well as the GI sheet used to make
the upper surface off the floor. The design of the floor was carried out as per the regulations and standards termed by Central Motor Vehicle Rules, Andhra Pradesh
Vehicle Rules. The model was developed from re drawing inputs provided by the organization. The 2D drawings and drafting are carried out using AutoCAD 2013. The 3D
Modeling of parts, components and final assembly was carried out using CATIA V5R20 and the analysis of the final model was completed using the analysis package
ANSYS Mechanical APDL R12.1

he existing Cross-Bearers possessed cross-sectional dimensions of 100 x 50 x 6 mm and checking for optimization for Cross-Bearers possessing dimensions 75 x 40 x
6 mm. The design is considered safe when the results after analysis are within the range of acceptance.

Results & Conclusion:

The results indicate that the both the existing as well as the optimized cross-bearers are SAFE designs as the induced Von-Mises Stresses in both are designs are within
the Ultimate Tensile Strength limit. Therefore, there will be plastic deformation as the  stress induced are greater than the yield stress.

Hence, by incorporating the optimized cross-bearers the weight of the bus body is drastically reduced  by 47.515 Kg. Therefore, there is a 24.75% weight reduction for
each manufactured bus floor.

Therefore, the reduction of weight reduces as much as 2,612.5 INR (approx. 40 USD) per bus and hence on a large scale production of 1000 buses per year, the
organization can minimize as much as 2,612,500 INR (approx. 40,192 USD) per annum.
