Activity Instructions and Script for Teacher

Before the lesson:

 Connect your device to the school WIFI and set up projection equipment for Kahoot

 Download ‘Kahoot’ and have the link ready (https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/39d478ca-cbca-4a65-

To extend students’ learning, we also suggest using slides from the Google Expedition entitled ‘Out

of Syria: Back into school’ which offers a complementary experience of refugee life.

Introduction

Teacher:

In this Google Expedition, we’ll learn about the global refugee crisis. We’ll look specifically at the

experience of refugees in Germany and we’ll also think about our own context.

Expedition 1: Refugees: Integration Through Education and Sport

Slide 1: The Unique Challenge
Teacher:
(From the Google Expedition resource)

Germany’s open-door policy on asylum seekers created an influx

of 1.5 million refugees, 323,000 of them school-age children. The
huge volume of new arrivals, speaking little to no German, has
created not only a demand for 20,000 more teachers but
specialized teachers trained to handle the socio-psychological
problems of their war-traumatized students. According to
Germany psychotherapists, one in five refugee children have
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and half have suffered
trauma.

What is a refugee? A refugee is a person who has been forced to

leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural
disaster.

Slide 2: The Importance of Language

Teacher:

All students are expected to learn the common language

(German). Now turn to your Kahoot.

Kahoot:

Q1: Would it be difficult for a young refugee student to learn a

new language at school?

Discuss: Do you know another language? Do you consider this

to be an advantage or a disadvantage?

3|Page
Slide 3: Limited Time
Teacher:

(From the Google Expedition resource)

In Germany, refugees 16 years and older represent the greatest

number of students in school.

Kahoot:

Q2: Should governments focus on educating children only?

Discuss: what would be the challenges of a high school refugee

starting school in a new country?

Slide 4: Personal Investment and Establishing

Teacher:
(From the Google Expedition resource)

While the German government was committed to meet the financial

responsibilities of welcoming such a large number of asylum seekers
and potential tax-paying citizens, it relied heavily upon the German
populace to help integrate the refugees into the local community.

Sport is a means of empowering refugees physically, emotionally

and socially by giving them a sense of belonging?

Kahoot:

Q3: When you played sport with a person you don’t know; did it
matter where they were from?

Discussion: Share your experience

Slide 5: Building Bridges

Teacher:

(From the Google Expedition resource)

Communities created Facebook pages to help coordinate volunteers,

clothing donations, initiatives, and events to welcome the new
arrivals. Here, an initiative was put in place to introduce the local
community to the new settlers, allowing the open dialogue and
personal interaction.

Pointers:
 Play to Build Community – Refugees play Frisbee with
members of the community
 Educating the Germans – a large inflatable tent is used as an
awareness center to inform the local citizenry of the plight of
the refugees and what the citizens can do to help with
integrating the refugees into the community.
 Meeting of Cultures – locals can meet and interact with
refugees
 Community Resources – upon arrival in Germany, refugees
are dispersed to various cities where they will be temporarily
accommodated while their applications are processed. Each
city has offices and information centers where refugees can
obtain information and community help in their resettlement.

Kahoot:

Q4: Are there any refugee communities where you live? Do you know which countries they are from?

Discuss: Do you personally know a refugee? Share your experience.

Slide 6: It starts with a dialogue
Teacher:

(From the Google Expedition resource)

Communities established ‘Refugee Cafes’ where refugees

could meet up with other refugees, exchange the latest info
from the home they left while gathering info and support for
settling in their new home.

Pointers:
 Memories from home – a small stage where refugees
can perform and listen to music from their Homeland
 Helping Others – Posters of Halkevi – the club
sponsor of this café – fighting for the rights of
refugees
 Networking – a bulletin board for local language
courses, jobs, and legal advice
 Navigating their new home – pamphlets on integration
and guide maps of the local city and political
information supporting feminism.

Kahoot:

Q5: Do you think this is helpful?

Discussion: Why do you think including these cultural references are important for refugees?

6|Page
Slide 7: Small Efforts, Big Impacts
Teacher:

(From the Google Expedition resource)

These are some of the thousands of used bicycles donated

by members of the German community. Once they’re
repaired, the Refugee integration depends greatly on the
kindness and generosity of community volunteers. This
kindness takes many forms and fills many needs: translators,
language instructors and tutors, city guides, coordinators for
activities such as sports and women’s groups.

Kahoot:

Q6: Can you learn anything from the refugee crisis?

Discussion: What can you share with refugees?
