Resolution No. 2018-063, authorizing two (2) free use days of the Sunset Center Theater
SUBJECT:
to the Carmel Unified School District on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019.

RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt the resolution authorizing two (2) free use days of the Sunset Center Theater to the Carmel Unified
School District on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019.

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
The 2017 Agreement between the City and Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. (SCC) provides that the City shall have
the right to use the theater and lobby for up to twelve (12) full days each fiscal year without charge, as long as the
spaces have not already been committed to rental customers by SCC.

The Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) is requesting two (2) of the City's free-use days for the use of the
theater and lobby on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019 for the annual district-wide choral and band festivals
featuring elementary, middle, and high school student musicians.

The CUSD has tentatively booked the theater and lobby for the requested date, and will confirm with Sunset
Center should the Council authorize the free use day.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact to the City associated with approval of the requested two (2) fee use days.
PRIOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
There have been no allocations of Sunset Center Free Theater Days for FY 2018-2019 to date.

RESOLUTION NO. 2018-063

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA GRANTING THE

CARMEL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO (2) SUNSET CENTER FREE THEATER DAYS ON MARCH 9,
2019 AND MARCH 26, 2019.

WHEREAS the City’s Amended and Restated Lease Agreement with Sunset Cultural Center (SCC),
adopted by the City Council on June 6, 2017, stipulates that the City shall have the right to use the Sunset
Center theater, lobby and dressing rooms for up to twelve (12) full days (designated in the Lease Agreement
as “Free Theater Days”) each fiscal year without charge;

WHEREAS the Carmel Unified School District is requesting two (2) of the City’s Free Theater Days for
the annual district wide choral and band festivals on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019; and

WHEREAS, the choral and band festivals performances will include elementary, middle, and high
school musicians.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-
THE-SEA DOES HEREBY:

Adopt a resolution granting the Carmel Unified School District two (2) Sunset Center Free Theater Days
on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019.

PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA this
2nd day of July, 2019 by the following roll call vote:

Dear Mr. Rerig,

Carmel Unified School District is planning the annual districtwide choral and band festivals for Thursday,
March 7, 2019 and Tuesday, March 26, 2019. These performances include our elementary, middle
and high school musicians together and showcase the developmental progression of our music
programming.

In the past the City has provided the District with access to "Free Theater Days". The parents, musicians
and administration hove greatly appreciated holding these performances in the Sunset Center. Not
only does it accommodate the large number of attendees, but it truly provides an inspiring performance
environment for our community's young musicians. We would like to formally request these two days
usage again this year.
