Resolution No. 2018-064, granting the Carmel Youth Center a Sunset Center Free
SUBJECT: Theater Day on Sunday, September 9, 2018.

RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Resolution No. 2018-064, granting the Carmel Youth Center a Sunset Center Free Theater Day on
Sunday, September 9, 2018.
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
The City’s Amended and Restated Lease Agreement with Sunset Cultural Center (SCC), adopted by the City
Council on June 6, 2017, stipulates that the City shall have the right to use the Sunset Center theater, lobby and
dressing rooms for up to twelve (12) full days (designated in the Lease Agreement as “Free Theater Days”)
each fiscal year without charge, provided that the spaces have not already been committed by SCC to rental
customers.

The Carmel Youth Center (CYC), a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, is requesting one of the City’s Free
Theater Days for an annual fundraising event to be held Sunday, September 9, 2018. CYC has signed a
contract with Sunset Center for the use of the plaza, terrace and theater lobby for the event.

Granting the Carmel Youth Center one of the Sunset Center Free Theater Days will result in a significant
savings in facility use fees for the organization.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact.
PRIOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION:
There have been no allocations of Sunset Center Free Theater Days for FY 2018-2019 to date.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA GRANTING THE


CARMEL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO (2) SUNSET CENTER FREE THEATER DAYS ON MARCH 9,
2019 AND MARCH 26, 2019.

WHEREAS the City’s Amended and Restated Lease Agreement with Sunset Cultural Center (SCC),
adopted by the City Council on June 6, 2017, stipulates that the City shall have the right to use the Sunset
Center theater, lobby and dressing rooms for up to twelve (12) full days (designated in the Lease Agreement
as “Free Theater Days”) each fiscal year without charge;

WHEREAS the Carmel Unified School District is requesting two (2) of the City’s Free Theater Days for
the annual district wide choral and band festivals on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019; and

WHEREAS, the choral and band festivals performances will include elementary, middle, and high
school musicians.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL-BY-
THE-SEA DOES HEREBY:

Adopt a resolution granting the Carmel Unified School District two (2) Sunset Center Free Theater Days
on March 7, 2019 and March 26, 2019.
