Both topographic may and field survey shows the area of the drainage basin upstream

of a proposed highway culvert, which is found to be 19ha. In terms of soils and surface
cover, the existing drainage area reasonably homogenous with mostly light woodlands
and brush. There appear to be two distinct flow paths converging in the lower area local
zoning allows light industry in an area adjacent to the highway. The combination of
highway improvements and growth in the region make full development in the zoned
area attractive and likely in the next few years. Find the peak discharge for the existing
drainage basin and the drainage basin assuming future development in the zoned area.
A 10-year design and 100 year check is required for the proposed culvert.

a. For existing condition

- Assume Path AC is about 50m of overland flow and 225m grassland.
- For a slope of 0.8% and pasture
o Vac1 = 0.20 m/s, similarly for grassland
o Vac2 = 0.42 m/s
b. For existing condition, Path CD is a grassy channel with estimated bank-to-bank
average velocity Vcd=0.7ms/. For future condition Vcd=1 m/s
c. Assume path BC is about 50m overland flow over pasture and 357m of grassy
swab. For a slope of 0.6% and pasture,
Vbc1 = 0.19m/s, similarly for grassy waterway
Vbc2 = 0.35m/s
d. Use this RIDF coefficients
Ew = 0.776 bw = 1981 dw = 8.6
Ew = 0.755 bw0 = 2642 dw0 = 8.2

Steps
1. Determine the drainage area
2. Determine the time of concentration
3. Ensure limitations of RM is not exceeded
4. Calculate the intensity
5. Run-off coefficient
6. Calculate peak discharge Q=CiA

Bransby Equation tc = 912(km) .

A⁰·¹ S⁰·²

AC tac1 = 50m / 0.2m/s + 255m / 0.42m/s = 14.29min

BC tbc = 50m/0.19m/s + 351m/0.35m/s = 21.10min

CD existing
Tcde = 213m/0.7m/s = 5.07min
Tcdf = 213m/1m/s = 3.55min

Tacde = 14.29 + 5.07 = 19.36min

Tacdf = 14.29 + 3.55 = 17.84min
Tbcde =21.10 + 5.07 = 26.17min
tbcdf = 21.10 + 3.55 = 24.65min

tc =( 91 (0.401)km) / ((14ha)⁰·¹ x (0.6)⁰·²) + (91x 213km)/(5⁰·¹ x.25⁰·² = 52.82

kenimatic way

tc = 6.94 (l.n)^0.6 / (i)^0.4 S^0.3
