16.9 BATTERIES & CHARGER (110 & 48 Volts)

Batteries and chargers for Protection and Control supply shall be provided.

16.9.1 DC SUPPLY SYSTEM

16.9.1.1 Battery
i. 1 (one) 110V battery. Capacity at least 400Ah/10h for substations a 132KV
substations and above
ii. The 48V batteries of not less than 200Ah/10h rating shall be included in the bid
for communication equipment and the RTU.
iii. The 110V and 48V batteries shall be Nickel cadmium type with a nominal
Voltage of 1.20Vpc.

The bidder’s design shall check adequacy of the proposed capacities based upon the calculated
consumption considering a fully developed substation. Where the design capacity is higher than
the employer’s capacity, the design capacity shall be adopted. Where the design is lower than the
proposed, the employer’s capacity shall be adopted.
Batteries shall be installed in separate room with explosion proof ventilation fan.

16.9.1.2 Charger
(a) 1 (one) DC charger for the 110V battery.
(b) 1 (one) DC charger for the 48V Battery.

The chargers shall be complete with instruments, breakers on AC and DC side and protection.
The chargers shall have auxiliary contacts for collection of status, alarms and measurands for the
SCADA system.

16.9.1.3 Switchboard
1 (one) switchboard 110VDC.

The board shall have:


(a) 1 (one) circuit breaker with magnetic and thermal release for the feeder from
earache charger and battery.
(b) 1 (one) A-meter with shunt for each battery.
(c) 1 (one) V-meter with selector switch for the voltage between the poles and
between poles and earth for each battery.
(d) 1 (one) set of contacts on the front for banana jacks for the battery voltage and
earth.
(e) 1 (one) battery monitoring devices with alarm contacts.
(f) 1 (one) lot of all necessary circuit breakers and miniature circuit breakers for the
outgoing feeders and circuits.

(g) 20% of the breakers of any size shall be spare and readily mounted.

16.9.1.4 Detailed specification for battery and charges


(a) Capacity 400 Ah at 10 hour discharge rate to 1.05V minimum @20oC.
(b) Cells should be complete with all corrosive resistant terminals, links fasteners and terminal
covers and cell record book and labels. Terminals also clearly indicated positive (+) and
negative (-). Specifications data are to be attached to each cell.
(c) 1.20 Volts nominal voltage per unit
(d) Cells should be capable of delivering 100% capacity at 20oC.
(e) Container need not to be transparent.
(f) Each cell should be of robust construction all round, having fire and mechanical shock
resistant lid/cover assembly.
(g) Documentary evidence of the Design Service life at 20oC of the batteries must be attached.
Those under 12 years’ service life will not be considered.
(h) All cells of a bank should be of the same dimensions, weight, make, and voltage and ampere
hour capacity.
(i) The Batteries to be used for protection and control in power stations whose standby
requirement is 10 hours minimum.
(j) The chargers to be used with the batteries are constant potential chargers.
(k) Supply should be accompanied by a set of detailed instruction manual on maintenance,
Design and operation in English and should include any special instructions. The manuals to
include operational curves and data limits.
(l) The Units should have low internal resistance which should be indicated in the manuals.
(m) The batteries should have low gas emission whose volume should be indicated in the manual.
(n) A list of previous supply to power utilities with quantities for the same battery function should
be included in the tender as documentary proof.

16.9.2 110VOLTS BATTERY CHARGER


16.9.2.1 Type
Automatic constant voltage float/boost battery charger

16.9.2.2 Input
Input Voltage – 415V –Three phase +/- 13%
Frequency – 50 Hz +/- 5%.

16.9.2.3 DC Output
i. Nominal – 110V
ii. Current – 75A min.
iii. Float setting – 128V
iv. Boost setting – 136V

16.9.2.4 DC Output Voltage Regulation (RMS)


i. Float mode: +/- 1%
ii. Boost mode: +1%; -4%
iii. For 0- 100% full load and within the input supply limits
iv.7% of the battery capacity

ii. Technical specifications data, and detailed instruction manual on erection, commissioning,
operation, maintenance, trouble shooting, spares catalogue and including any special
instructions shall be provided. The manual must be in English.

16.9.3 48VOLTS BATTERY CHARGER


16.9.3.1 Type
Automatic constant voltage float/boost battery charger

16.9.4 QUARANTEED TECHNICAL SCHEDULES

The appropriate Technical guarantees in appropriate Volume II Technical schedule section shall
be completely filled

16.10 TELECOMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT


It is proposed to have a 48 fibre OPGW on the line its associated Terminal equipment, RTU for
SCADA and a telephone extension.

16.10.1 OPGW, COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT AND SCADA REQUIREMENTS

The Scope will include Supply and Installation of communications, telephones, tele-protection
and SCADA equipment for the efficient supervision, control, operation and maintenance of the
transmission system.

16.10.2 SCOPE OF WORK

The Scope will include Supply and Installation of communications, telephones, tele-protection
and SCADA equipment for the efficient supervision, control, operation and maintenance of the
transmission system. Optical fibre communication link with its associated terminal equipment is
required from the Narok Substation to Bomet Substation. At Narok the signals from the terminal
equipment shall be integrated into the existing communication System to local control centre and
to the National Control Centre.

The contractor shall include detailed system design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing,
commissioning, remedying of defects, maintaining the works during the defects liability period
and any incidental work necessary for the proper completion of the work in accordance with this
contract.
FATs shall be carried out for fibre, OLTE and RTU as per cls 1.24. Training shall be carried out
for RTU and SDH equipment.

Detailed requirements are as follows:-

System design – The system design and preparation of contractor's drawings to approval of the
Engineer

Supply and installation of fibre optic lead-in cables including mounting hardware and splicing.

Supply and installation of lead in cables to the equipment terminals

Supply and installation of fibre optic terminal and multiplexing

Supply and installation of supervisory management system and cabling to the relevant distribution
frame(s)

Supply and installation of DC power supplies to the new substation.

Factory testing of the terminal equipment and supervisory prior to delivery.
