15
16 March 2013 Prepared by AGS Pile, Structural & Geotechnical Testing Services
6.0 Triaxial Unconsolidated Undrained Test (UU)
Measured in a triaxial cell where
the sample is subject to an all
round confining pressure
Measure the undrained shear
strength Cu and friction angle is
zero
Usually performed on fine
grained soils
Drainage valve is closed and no
volume change is allowed
Pore water pressures are not
normally measured
The stress strain behaviour and
the strength parameters are used
to model the engineering
problems when undrained
conditions are present, typically
in short term design

Shear strength consists of two components: cohesion and friction
angle.

τf is the maximum shear stress the soil can take without failure, under
normal stress of σ.

7.0 Triaxial Consolidated Undrained Test (Effective Stress)
Measured effective shear
strength parameters C’ & ϕ’
Usually performed on fine
grained soils
Can be performed on both
cohesive and non cohesive soil
Pore water pressures develops
and measured during shear and
no volume change is allowed
The stress strain behaviour and
the strength parameters are used
to model the engineering
problems when undrained
conditions are present, typically
in long term applications

8.0 Consolidated Drained Test (Effective Stress)
Measured effective shear
strength parameters C’ & ϕ’
Usually performed on fine
grained soils
Performed mostly on non
cohesive soil
Pore water pressures allows to
dissipate and volume change
measured during

9.0 Direct Shear Test

39
16 March 2013 Prepared by AGS Pile, Structural & Geotechnical Testing Services
9.0 Direct Shear Test Advantages
Relatively simple to carry out
Suitable for both disturbed and
undisturbed sample
Consolidation is rapid due to
small thickness of specimen

Disadvantages
Constrained to fail along a
predetermined plane of shear
Distribution of stress on the
surtface is not uniform
No control can be excercised over
drainage
Pore water pressures cannot be
measured
