rob’s double stroke roll exercises

4 steps to build a double stroke roll

the ideal double is halfway between a bounced set of 2 notes and 2 individually played singles.

these exercises, which i literally still do every day i practice snare drum, break double bounces down into
their simplest elements and build them back up progressively into a full roll. those exercises include:

1. work on the individual doubles (aka one-handed flams), focusing on shape and spacing.
2. match hands.
3. transition from R to L and then from L to R.
4. longer stroke transitions to build it back into the roll in full.

1. one-handed flams 2. match hands

3. 2-stroke transitions

4. more stroke transitions
