CE Board November 2002

For the cable loaded as shown in the figure.

1) Which of the following gives the value of the stress of BC?
2) Which of the following gives the value of angle β1?
3) Which of the following gives the total length of the cable?

Example: The cord in the figure is wrapped around a frictionless
pulley and supports a 100 kg (981 N) mass.

1. What is the total pin reaction at A in N?

2. What is the total pin reaction at E in N?
3. What is the total force exerted on bar ABC by the pin at B in N?

The center of mass of the vertical 800 kg panel is at G. The
panel is mounted on wheels which permit ease of horizontal
movement along the fixed rail. If the bearing at A becomes
“frozen” so that the wheel cannot turn, compute the force P
required to slide the panel. The coefficient of friction between
the wheel and the rail is 0.30.

The uniform 50 kg plank is resting on rough surfaces at A
and B whose coeff. of static friction are as shown. A 100
kg horse starts running towards B.
a. What is the reaction at B?
b. What is the reaction at A?
c. What is the value of x when the plank will start to slide?

A 200-lb block is in contact with a plane inclined at 300 to the
horizon. A force P, parallel to and acting up the plane, is applied
to the body. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.20, (a) find
the value of P to just cause motion to impend up the plane, and
(b) find P to just prevent motion down the plane. (c) If P = 80 lb
determine the magnitude and direction of the friction force.

A counterclockwise moment M=1500 in·# is applied
to the flywheel. If the coefficient of friction between
the band and the pulley is 0.20, compute the
minimum force P to prevent the wheel from rotating

OGIE 2009
To stop the wheel from rotating
counterclockwise, T2 must effect a
clockwise rotation, therefore it
must be greater than T1.
