3. A simply supported beam has a span of 12m and is designed to its full flexural capacity it has a section
of W 450 x 83, A36 steel. Assume the beam to be non compact section.

respectively. Sag rods are placed at the mid span and Fbx = Fby = 140 MPa. Use Sx = 4.48 x 104 mm3 and
Sy = 4.48 x 104 mm3. Using Interaction Formula, determine the following:

a) The maximum ratio of actual to allowable bending stress for the combination of (DL + LL) load.

b) The maximum ratio of actual to allowable bending stress for the combination of [DL + 0.75(LL+WL)]
load.

6. The initial compressive force of a steel column can be determined by using Euler's Formula. The
properties of the column are the following; A = 8129 mm2, Ix = 178.30 x 106 mm4, Iy = 18.80 x 106 mm4,
Proportional limit = 320 MPa. The x-axis has an unbraced length of 8m which is pinned at top and fixed
at the bottom with k = 0.70 to prevent sidesway. The y-axis has an unbraced length of __________ due
to bracing at the midheight.

a) Determine the critical slenderness ratio.

1100 Pa, roof live load of 1000Pa and wind velocity pressure of 1500 Pa. The combined gust effect
factors and pressure coefficients at leeward and windward are 0.40 and 0.60, respectively. The
allowable shear stress parallel to the grain = 1.10 MPa, allowable bending stress = 16 MPa, modulus of
elasticity = 12x103 MPa and unit weight of wood is 7.50 KN/m3. Using Interaction Formula , determine
the following:

i. The maximum ratio of actual to allowable bending stress for the combination of (DL +
LL) load.

ii. The maximum ratio of actual to allowable bending stress for the combination of (DL +
0.75(LL+WL) load.

2. In the bridge truss shown in Figure 1, the end chord AB is composed of two C 230 x 30 channels
latticed together so that the fabricated section has equal moment of inertia about the axes of
symmetry.

a. Compute the slenderness ratio of section AB.

b. What is the axial capacity of member AB in KN?

c. If the safe load P on the truss is governed by the strength of member AB, determine
the value of 'P' using AISC Specifications with Fy = 280 MPa.

3. A W 8 x 27 steel column 6m long is pin connected at the top and the bottom end is part of a frame
subjected to joint translation (sidesway). It carries an axial load of 800 KN and a counterclockwise
