STRUCTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT PAPER

01. Structural Philosophy:

A new Commercial Building, Bank Asia Building, is planned at abovementioned site. The Project Site
has an area of 54.60 Katha, or 3653.53 Square Metre. It is understood that the allocation of the
Project Site between the two ownership entities will be 31.92 Katha (or 2135.91 Square Metre) for
Enterprise Asia and 22.68 Katha (or 1517.62 Square Metre) for Bank Asia.

The development shall comprise two 22-Storey Building Blocks with 4 level basements, one for Bank
Asia Limited and the other one for Enterprise Asia Limited. Bank Asia Limited will have its Corporate
Headquarters, a Bank Branch and rentable office space in its high-rise Block, whereas Enterprise
Asia will have its own office and rentable spaces. Basement floors shall house car parks. Two towers
shall differentiate above ground floor and there shall be bridge connection at each floor. Ground floor
shall contain office spaces, lobby, green areas, water bodies, vertical transportation systems etc.
while upper floors shall be dedicated for office spaces. There is a water body at ground floor from
which two separate shear wall to be picked up. The building consists of four two-flight stairs which
runs from lower basement to roof and four lift cores consists of 12 lifts. The gross built-up area is
approximately 52,372.30 sqm.

02. Structural Design Consideration:

a) Structural systems
Proposed structure is a reinforced cement concrete structure. Basic Structural system of
the project is suggested preferably to be Moment Resisting Frame System. Shear walls
will be provided as required in coordination with architectural drawings.
b) Substructure
Available Soil Test Report suggests Mat Foundation for the structure. However type of
foundation will be finalized after detail analysis of the structure.
c) Superstructure
Superstructure shall be Rigid Frame structure with columns / shear walls, flat slabs with
drop panels and edge supported beams.

There are glazed façade and internal walls shall be 125mm brickwork as per Architectural
drawings.
Plinth = 1.5m
Typical floor Floor Height = 3.6m

03. Design Codes:

Design codes to be used are:
a) Bangladesh National Building Code - 1993
b) ACI- 318-14
c) UBC 94

04. Materials:
Material strengths will be typically as under:
a) Concrete:
Specified compressive strength at 28 days should be as follows:
Specified compressive strength Structural Elements

f c = 3000psi For Shore Pile

f c = 4000psi For Foundation

f c = 5500psi For all other structural elements like Column, Shear Wall, Slab, Beam etc.

b) Reinforcing bars
For Reinforcing bars, fy = 60,000psi

b) Lateral loads:
i) Wind load:
Based on Bangladesh National Building Code – 1993 (BNBC-1993)
Basic Wind Speed = 210 km/h
Exposure A
Structure Importance Category = 1
Use Gust Response Factor, Gh for Non-Slender buildings and Structures from Table
6.2.11 of BNBC 1993.
Use Overall Pressure Coefficients, Cp for Rectangular Buildings with flat roofs from
Table 6.2.15 of BNBC 1993
ii) Seismic Load:
As per BNBC 1993
Assumed
Seismic zone coefficient, Z = 0.15
Structure Importance coefficient, I =1
Response modification coefficient, R =8

Total Seismic dead load, W = Total dead load including

Superimposed dead load,
25% of floor live load
in storage and warehouse
Occupancies, total weight
of permanent equipment
Site coefficient, S = 1.5
Ct = 0.073 (BNBC);
= 0.03 (UBC 94)
Numerical coefficient, C ≤ 2.75

07. Limitations for Serviceability:

a) Deflection
As per Table 6.6.4 of Bangladesh National Building Code -1993
b) Drift
Global Drift = H/350 to H/500
Storey Drift ≤ 0.04 h/R ≤ 0.005h (for structures having a
fundamental period of less than 0.7 second)

≤ 0.03 h/R ≤ 0.004h (for structures having a

fundamental period of 0.7 second or greater)

Where, h = height of the building

R = response modification coefficient for
structural systems
