“The Seven Ages of Man”

from Shakespeare’s As You Like It

1. Infant - mewling, puking

2. Schoolboy - shining face, whining, unwilling to go to school

3. Lover - sighing, woeful ballad to mistress

4. Soldier - bearded, strange oaths, seeking reputation in cannon’s mouth

5. Judge (Justice) - round belly, lined cape, eyes severe, full of wise saws

6. Slippered Pantaloon (growing old) - spectacles on nose, hose to wide for his
shrunk shank, big manly voice turned again toward childish treble pipes and
whistle sounds.

7. Old Man - second childishness, without teeth, without eyes, without taste,
without everything.
