The ECM bases decisions on input information and memory information. After the ECM receives the input
information, the ECM sends a corresponding response to the outputs. The inputs and outputs of the ECM are
connected to the machine harness by two 70 contact connectors (J1 and J2). The inputs and outputs to the ECM
can be viewed through the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET).

In most instances when a diagnostic code or an event code is activated, the ECM is the least likely cause of the
problem. When an ECM is suspected of failure, always ensure that the latest software is flashed on the ECM.
Verify that the ECM connections are secure. Then, verify that the problem is still active before replacing an
ECM

Note: Only the complete ECM is serviced (no lower levels components). The ECM must be replaced if the ECM
is damaged. Replace the ECM if a failure is diagnosed.

Inputs
The inputs describe the status of the machine systems. Two types of inputs exist. The inputs can be either a
switch type or a sensor type. Switches provide an open, a ground, or a + battery signal to the inputs of the
controller. Sensors (frequency, PWM, or voltage) provide a changing signal to the sensor inputs of the controller.
The inputs of the ECM are listed in Table 1 and Table 2.

Transmission Gearbox Temperature Sensor is located near the transmission oil filter.

The temperature sensor for the transmission gearbox oil informs the ECM of the temperature of the transmission
gearbox oil.

The sensor sends an analog signal to the Machine ECM indicating transmission oil temperature. The resistance
range for this sensor is 33,650 ohms at −40° C (−40° F)to 18.6 ohms at 150° C (302° F).

Hystat pump forward and reverse pressure sensors measure the pump discharge pressure. The pressure sensors
send a PWM signal input to the machine ECM. The pressure information is used for hydrostatic pump control.

Speed Sensors

Speed sensors inform the ECM of component speeds. The speed sensor output is a pulse width modulated signal.
The duty cycle of the signals will vary in proportion to the speed of the component being measured. These PWM
signals are inputs to the ECM. The ECM provides 10V to the sensors.

The bypass switch is a pressure switch that shows whether the filter is plugged and the filter is being bypassed.
The bypass switch is a normally open switch. The bypass switch will close at 275 ± 27.5 kPa (40 ± 4 psi)
differential pressure.

The bypass switch is one of the inputs used to drive the system indicator in the instrument cluster. The indicator
is activated when the bypass switch is closed and transmission oil temperature is greater than a set value while
the engine is running. The transmission filter bypass switch provides a ground to the ECM if pressure rises
above 345 kPa (50 psi) notifying the ECM that the filter is plugged.

The differential lock trigger switch is a normally open switch. When the trigger switch is pulled, the switch is
closed. The trigger switch provides a ground to the ECM when pulled. The ECM will activate the differential
lock when the trigger switch is pulled if ground speed is within the set range.

The Forward Neutral Reverse (FNR) switch allows the operator to communicate to the ECM the desired
direction of travel. The (FNR) switch provides a PWM signal to the ECM based on the selected position of the
switch.

Outputs
The ECMs respond to decisions by sending electrical signals to the outputs. The outputs can create an action or
the outputs can provide information to the operator or the service technician.

The hydrostatic interlock solenoid is located in the valve block attached to the hydrostatic drive pump.

The hydrostatic interlock solenoid controls the flow of pilot oil to the hydrostatic pump control valve. The
hydrostatic interlock solenoid is a two position hydraulic solenoid valve.

For the control of the hydrostatic pump solenoids, the ECM applies a current amount that corresponds to signals
from operator and machine inputs. The hydrostatic pump forward and reverse solenoids control pilot oil flow to
the actuating piston. The actuating piston controls the pilot valve. The pilot valve controls pilot oil to the
displacement piston. The displacement piston actuates the pump swash plate which increases pump
displacement. The hydrostatic pump forward and reverse solenoids have a variable position based on the amount
of PWM signal supplied by the ECM. Increasing or decreasing PWM signal is based on operator and machine
inputs.

The ECM provides a current amount that corresponds to the input signals from the operator and machine inputs.
The current provided by the ECM controls the displacement of the hydrostatic motors. The hydrostatic motor
solenoids are a variable position valve based on the amount of PWM signal supplied by the ECM. Increasing or
decreasing PWM signal is based on operator and machine inputs.

The hydrostatic motor clutch solenoid is controlled by the ECM. Based on operator and machine inputs the
ECM controls the PWM signal to the solenoid. The hydrostatic motor clutch solenoid has a variable valve
position based on the PWM signal applied by the ECM.

Backup Alarm/Auto Reverse Light Relay

The Backup Alarm/Auto Reverse Light Relay is located behind the panel shown on the left side of the cab exterior.

Relay coil resistance is measured at pins 85 and 86. Relay coil resistance is 228 ohms ± 22.8 ohms at 25° C
(77° F).

Cat Data Link

The Cat Data Link is an input/output of the ECM. The data link uses the connector for the service port in order
to communicate with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician. A data link connection is provided for the product
link.

Note: The control for the product link provides a global positioning system for the machine.

The data link is bidirectional. The bidirectional link allows the ECM to input information and output
information. The data link consists of the following parts: internal ECM circuits, the related harness wiring, the
service tool connector and the connector for the product link. The Cat Data Link connects to the ECM at contact
J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)).

The ECM receives commands from the Cat ET in order to change the operating modes. The Cat ET will
read the service codes that are stored in the memory of the ECM. The Cat ET will clear the service codes
that are stored in the memory of the ECM.

The ECM sends the input and the output information to the Caterpillar ET.

Note: An electronic control module that uses the Cat Data Link will have a module identifier. The MID for the
Machine Electronic Control Module is 039.

CAN Data Link

A data link is required for communication with the service tool (Cat ET) and the electronic control modules as
well as instrument clusters and other devices that use this communications protocol. The data link is not used in
order to broadcast any diagnostic information.

On most Cat machine models, there is more than one CAN system. These CAN systems are used to conduct
high speed operational data transfer between control modules. Some components also now use the CAN data
link to send input signals to the ECM.
