What is GPON ??

 Gigabit Passive Optical Network

GPON is the dominant technology for delivering last
mile access over fiber.
ITU-T G.984.x specifies the GPON protocol.
FSAN (Full Service Access Network) Organization
developed GPON standard and extensions, as well as
manages interoperability.
FSAN is run by carriers: Verizon, BT, France Telecom,
NTT, BSNL, AT&T… and includes vendor members
(e.g. Alphion)

GPON - Advantages
 High Bandwidth:
 Gigabit Ethernet transport
 2.5 Gbit/s downstream
 1.25 Gbit/s upstream
 Simplified Services Bundling
Bandwidth shared by up to 128 customers per GPON port
 High Quality of Service (QoS)
 Carrier class QoS
 Synchronous system
 Advanced OAM&P
 Next Generation:
 All-IP system
 Passive Optical Network (PON)
No active elements in the field – No powering, No truck rolls,
Outside Plant (OSP) lifetime > 50 years.
 Lower Operating Expenses (OpEx)
