LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES

· What ethical issues could exist in your work?

Within my magazine the ethical issues which could occur include; the language with the
articles, including non discriminative words which could cause offence. The privacy and
confidentiality of people included within the publication but also behind the scenes
producing/editing - this also can be a legal issue. Airbrushing the pictures I take for my
magazine will represent an unfair depiction of a person and it can have a long lasting
effect on people who believe that the way one looks within a magazine is a true example
of ‘how someone should look’, to avoid this problem I will ensure my pictures are edited
fairly and naturally so they aren’t fake looking to please an audience who get offended by
this issue.

· What legal issues could exist in your work (copyright, images, content)?
The legal issues which could occur within my magazine include (as said above) the
privacy and confidentiality of a person. Under the Independent Press Standards
Organisation it lists 3 different areas of privacy that needs to be protected, one includes;
everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and
correspondence, including digital communications. Also an important legal issue is
accuracy which outlines that the Press must take care not to publish inaccurate,
misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported by the
text. To solve both these problems I will ensure that all information within my work will
be checked and verified before even considered - I don’t personally want to release
misleading information that could potentially damage a person's reputation or even life

· Who is responsible for regulating print based content? What is their role?
What is the Editors Code of Practice?
IPSO is the largest independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry in the
UK and exists to uphold standards of journalism in the UK and to support the public in
seeking guidance where they believe that the Editors' Code of Practice has been breached.
The Editors' Code deals with issues such as accuracy, invasion of privacy, intrusion into
grief or shock and harassment. IPSO is able to consider concerns about editorial content
in newspapers and magazines, and about the conduct of journalists. IPSO handles
complaints, and conducts its own investigations into editorial standards and compliance.
IPSO has the power, where necessary, to require the publication of prominent corrections
and critical adjudications, and may ultimately fine publications in cases where failings
are particularly serious and systemic.
