Avoiding Damage to the Scanner

To reduce the risk of damaging the scanner, please read, understand and follow these notices.

NOTICE
• Do not plug anything other than the computer and monitors and optional external
storage device into the isolation transformer.
• Do not use extension cords or multiple portable power socket outlets.
• Make sure no liquids come in contact with the detector plate and monoblock. These
are sensitive electrical instruments.
• The cables supplied with the computer workstation and scanner must be used only
for their respective functions. No other use is allowed.
• Never manually manipulate the C-arm. Manual manipulation of the C-arm can have
detrimental effects on the normal operation of the scanner.
• Do not hang objects from the detector plate or monoblock or use them as hand-holds
or for leverage. Catastrophic damage to the scanner could result from such misuse.
• Do not cover or otherwise block the monoblock vents.
• Test the clearance between the headrest and the detector plate by rotating the C-arm
with the control pendant before performing a scan. If the headrest collides with the
detector plate, damage may occur.
• Be sure the patient stabilizer support arm is fully open or closed. It the support arm is
partially open, it could collide with the monoblock during rotation, possibly damaging
one or both of these components.
• When you are not using the control pendant, it should be secured to the patient
stabilizer support arm. If you fail to do so – for instance, if you place the pendant or its
cable on the monoblock or detector plate – the pendant could fall and break.
• Turn off the scanner if you do not intend to use it for at least three hours. Always turn
off the scanner overnight.
• When installing the detector plate, be careful not to over-tighten the screws. They will
strip with little pressure.

Pre-Installation Requirements

WARNING

To reduce the risks associated with radiation:

• installation standards require that visual or audio communication must be maintained with the
patient, together with access to the control interface during exposure.
• install the computer workstation in an appropriate location. Some localities require the
workstation to be in a protected area.
• ensure the scanner room door cannot interfere with the movement of the scanner's swing
arm.
To reduce the risks associated with impact or crush injury:
• install in accordance with all applicable regulations in seismically active locales.
To reduce the risks associated with strong electromagnetic fields:
• install the scanner in a room that complies with applicable X-ray installation standards.

X-ray Facility Requirements

Consult local regulations for specific requirements for X-ray facilities. A typical layout provides one area
for the ILUMA Cone Beam CT Scanner and another for the system's computer and operator.

Recommended Room Size

The recommended room size for an ILUMA Cone Beam CT Scanner is 8' × 11' × 8' / 2.4 m × 3.3 m ×
2.4 m.

NOTICE: Do not place any equipment within 6'7" / 2 m of the scanner. Keeping non-system equipment
away from the scanner prevents such equipment from being damaged by the scanner's moving parts.

Floor and Space Requirements

The floor will need to support approximately 3 pounds per square inch (20,684 N/m^2). The system's
footprint is 42'' (106.68 cm) by 54'' (137.16 cm). The weight of the scanner without a patient is 1000 lbs
(454 kg).

Electrical Requirements

Scanner
This scanner requires a dedicated electrical circuit. USA: 115 VAC, 14 A (20 A recommended), 60 Hz;
Europe: 240 VAC, 8A, 50 Hz.

Control Workstation
The computer workstation is connected to a 115 VAC, 14 A, 60 Hz (USA) / 240 VAC, 8 A, 50 Hz (Europe)
wall outlet through an isolation transformer. The minimum apparent resistance for supply mains is 45 mȍ.

Connectivity Requirements
The computer requires a high-speed Internet connection (e.g., cable, DSL or an Internet-connected LAN).
The optional external storage device requires a network connection.

Electromagnetic Interference
Avoid installing the scanner near strong radio frequency signals or portable and/or mobile radio frequency
devices, as these may affect the operation of the scanner.

Avoid installing the scanner or computer adjacent to or stacked with other equipment. If this cannot be
avoided, verify normal operation in that configuration.

The ILUMA 1313, 2520 and workstation are intended for use in the electromagnetic environment specified
below. The customer or the user of the ILUMA 1313, 2520 and workstation can help prevent
electromagnetic interference by maintaining a minimum distance between portable and mobile RF
communications equipment (transmitters) and the ILUMA 1313, 2520 and workstation as recommended
below, according to the maximum output power of the communications equipment.

Separation Distance According to Frequency of Transmitter (m)

Rated Maximum Output 150 kHz to 80 MHz 80 MHz to 800 MHz 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz
Power of Transmitter (W) d = 1.2¥P d = 1.2¥P d = 2.3¥P
0.01 0.12 0.12 0.23
0.1 0.38 0.38 0.73
1 1.2 1.2 2.3
10 3.8 3.8 7.3
100 12 12 23

For transmitters rated at a maximum output power not listed above, the recommended separation
distance d in meters (m) can be estimated using the equation applicable to the frequency of the
transmitter, where P is the maximum output power rating of the transmitter in watts (W) according to the
transmitter manufacturer.

Notes
• At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency applies.
• These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by
absorption and reflection from structures, objects and people.

Attach the power cord to the back of the scanner, and plug the scanner into the wall.

Note: All of the cables and board connectors are labeled.

Testing the Chair

Connect the E-stop box cable to J4 on the ILUMA system board (see Figure 21).

Note: This connection is temporary.

Turn the main power switch to the On position. Turn the 3-position switch on the switch panel to the On
position, and then briefly hold in the Reset position and release it. The scanner should come on.

Plug in the chair and test it using the pendant.

Turn off the scanner and unplug the power cord from the wall.

Disconnect the E-stop box cable from the ILUMA system board.

Attaching the Chair

Two tabs protrude from the base of the chair. These tabs should align with the holes at the end of the
ILUMA scanner. Remove the bolts from the tabs. Push the chair into place, being sure to pull any leftover
slack from the chair wiring so that it does not get pinched between the scanner and the chair. Replace the
bolts (see Figure 22).

NOTICE: Do not fully tighten the bolts. Finger tighten them for now.

Step 9: Level and Stabilize the Scanner

It is very important to level your scanner because any movement of the scanner can affect the quality of
scanned images. Leveling is easier to do on a hard surface such as tile; it is more difficult on carpeting.

Level the scanner by adjusting the feet (see Figure 23). Ensure that all of the feet are touching the
ground.

Figure 23

After the feet are in place, tighten the lock nut of each foot flush against the base of the scanner so the
feet will not loosen over time.

Level the chair by adjusting the feet. Fully tighten the chair bolts.

Note: These bolts should be very tight. A solid coupling of the chair and scanner is critical to the overall
stability of the system and to the quality of scanned images.

Repeat the leveling procedure to remove any instability caused by tightening the chair bolts.

Notes
• A leveled scanner and chair will not rock when pushed from any direction.
• The stability of the scanner is more important than how level the scanner is.

Step 10: Connect the External Cables

Run the male end of the serial cable and either end of the Ethernet cable (yellow or green) from the back
side of the scanner up into the pedestal. (Use the same opening – the opening next to the primary
transformer – that you used for the chair cables.) Run the cables up the right side of the inside of the
pedestal.

The serial cable connects to J1 on the X-ray control board (see Figure 24).

Figure 24

Step 11: Install the Detector Plate

Pull the detector plate from its box and remove the four Phillips-head screws on the right and left sides of
the front of the plate. (The detector plate will be connected to the C-arm opposite the X-ray tube [see
Figure 27].)

Figure 27

The detector plate will slide into the detector plate mounting bracket from the top. The side of the plate
that faces the X-ray tube is black. Before sliding the plate into place, connect the grey power cord to the
plate. This cord is located in the bracket housing. It plugs into the top connector of the detector plate. (It
will plug in only one way.) Use the slip ring to secure it.

Slide the detector plate into place. Attach it to the housing with the Phillips-head screws that you removed
previously (see Figure 28).

Fault occurs upon starting X-rays Check for loose wires on top of the X-ray tube.
Check J1 on the power distribution board for the correct voltage
for the location power source.
Perform the 0/70 calibration procedure (see page 61).
X-ray tube "pops" during fault Try reconditioning the X-ray tube (up to three or four times) to
burn off any excess gas in the tube.
NOTICE: Do not overheat the tube. Reconditioning the tube more
than three or four times consecutively can overheat the tube.
Verify wiring between J9 on the X-ray control board and CP1 on
the anode control board.
Verify correct anode control board for the location power source.
(For 60Hz, R14 will be a large brown resistor. For 50Hz, it will be
a small blue resistor.)
Replace the X-ray tube.
Inverter was installed on site Check for proper assembly of the red and grey wires on the
bottom of the inverter and the five wires behind the clear window.
Replace one or more of the potentially bad components: X-ray
tube, X-ray control board, anode power board, anode control
board and inverter.
Filament Fault A fault of this type might indicate a faulty or improperly calibrated
X-ray control board, a faulty filament drive board, or in some
cases a faulty X-ray tube.
Power coming in to the filament drive board at CP1 should be
125-136VAC.
Perform the 0/70 calibration procedure (see page 61).
Replace the filament drive board and rerun the 0/70 calibration
procedure (see page 61).
Replace the X-ray control board and rerun the 0/70 calibration
procedure (see page 61).
Replace the X-ray tube, rerun the 0/70 calibration procedure (see
page 61) and perform scanner alignment (see Work Instruction
IIW-820.170.12).
Anode Fault If the fault immediately follows an inverter fault, check fuse F1 on
the power distribution board. If F1 is a 5A fuse, replace it with an
8A fuse. If the fault happens immediately after X-rays are turned
on, make sure that the cable from the anode power board is
plugged into J4 on the power distribution board.
Check fuse F1 on the power distribution board. If F1 is a 5A fuse,
replace it with an 8A fuse.
Check the 70VAC output from the anode power board by
performing the 0/70 calibration procedure (see page 61).
Check the incoming voltage from the main transformer.
If the fault occurs immediately following the activation of X-rays,
check CP1 on top of X-ray tube or replace the X-ray control board.
