Module Number 3
Title Using Communicative Strategies in various Speech Situations
Allotted Time 20 Hours (5 weeks)

INTRODUCTION
We know that when human beings communicate, they do so far certain reasons or functions. To
achieve these functions, communicative strategies have to be applied. The Strategies discussed in this Unit
encompass and make use of the Types of Speech Context, Speech Styles, and Speech Acts. Recognizing
what the Speech Context is and applying the appropriate Speech Style – made up of Speech Acts – combine
to from a Communicative Strategy for imparting a Message.
Student’s Learning Outcomes (SLO)
At the end of this module, the learners should be able to:
- Identifies the various types of speech
- Exhibits appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior in a given speech context
- Distinguishes types of speech style
- Identifies social situations in which each speech style is appropriate to use
- Observes the appropriate language forms in using a particular speech style
- Responds appropriately and effectively to a Speech Act.
Pre-Test (Preliminary Exercise)
The teacher will list on the blackboard a member of possible topics for Communication. Students
will be allowed to choose whether they want to present the Topic as speech (by one person), as a
conversation/dialogue (by two persons), or a group of discussion (by three or more people). The activity
will be judged on whether the communication type is suitable to delivering the Message of the Topic.

Summary:
This unit focused on the reasons why people communicate, the Functions that Communication
serve so that human beings live harmoniously in a society. Still, it must be emphasized that these Function
are not mutually exclusive – they do not exist independently to each other. Most time, the Functions overlap.
To be able to use Regulation and Control. Information must be given first. Information is also important so
that there will be a basis for Motivation to persuade the Listener to believe in what the Speaker is saying.
Motivation will also be achieved if there is Emotional Expression in the appeal. Finally, Social Interaction
is the basis for the other Functions to be accomplished.

Post Test (Assessment Exercise)
Each group will be presented with a Specific Context and a Speech Style. The Teacher will ensure
that the Context and Style will be partnered incorrectly. Prepare a dialogue for that Speech Context matched
with the incorrect Speech Style and present it to the class. After the presentation, explain to the class how
it felt to use the inappropriate Speech Style with the assigned Speech Context.
