Active Voice and Passive Voice

The Rule :

Active voice : Subject / Doer + (Verb + tense) + Direct object

Example 1: Rida drives a car.

Subject/ Doer : Rida + (drives: main verb: drive + Tense : simple present „s‟) + Direct object: a car.

There are two elements in the word ‘ drives’: infinitive + tense

Passive voice: Direct Object + (to be + tense) + Past participle of main verb+ by + Doer.

Transformation: A car is driven by Rida

Example2 with a different tense: Soumia is playing football. Direct object

Subject/ Doer Main Verb (play) +tense present continuous (is ing)

Transformation:

Passive voice: Football is being played by Soumia.

played

Direct Object + (to be + tense) + Past participle of main verb+ by + Doer.

Example3 with a different tense: The parrot spoke English. Direct object

Subject/ Doer Main Verb (speak) +tense = simple past (irregular form: spoke)

Transformation:

Passive voice: English was spoken by the parrot.. by + Doer.

Speak-spoke-spoken

Direct Object + (to be + tense = past simple) + Past participle of main verb
Aspects to take into consideration:

1. Transitivity: only transitive verbs are converted into passive voice

 The baby cries. The verb “cry” is intransitive. It doesn‟t need a direct object.
 This company produces cars. The verb “produce” is transitive. It needs a direct object.
2. The number :
1
 Active voice: This company (singular) produces cars. ( Direct object „cars‟: plural)
 Passive voice: Cars ( plural) are produced by this company.
3. Irregular verbs: infinitive : write – past simple : wrote – past participle: written
4. Regular verbs: visit – visited – visited

USE
The Passive is used:
1. when the agent (=the person who does the action) is unknown, unimportant or obvious from the
context.
Jane was shot. (We don’t know who shot her.)
This church was built in 1815. (Unimportant agent) He has been arrested. (Obviously by the police)
2. To make more polite or formal statements.
The car hasn’t been cleaned. (more polite) (You haven’t cleaned the car. – less polite)
3. When the action is more important than the agent, as in processes, instructions, events, reports,
headlines, new items, and advertisements.
Example: 30 people were killed in the earthquake.
4. To put emphasis on the agent. Example: The new library will be opened by the Queen.
5. if the subject of the active voice sentence is something like somebody, people, they, you, etc.
Someone broke the window. → the window was broken.

DOUBLE OBJECT VERBS

When we have verbs that take two objects like, for example, give somebody something, we can convert
the active sentence into a passive one in two ways:
Active voice: Rick gave me (indirect object) this book (direct object).
Transformation 1: I was given this book by Rick.
Transformation2: This book was given to me by Rick.

Pronouns: If the indirect object of the active voice sentence is a personal pronoun it has to be changed into
a subject pronoun to be the subject of the passive voice sentence.

SUBJEC OBJEC
IT ←→ T
me SUBJECT OBJECT
You ←→ you We ←→ us
He ←→ him You ←→ you
She ←→ her They ←→ them
It ←→ it
