How to Restore Asus Laptop When F9 Does Not Work

If you are getting recovery/BSOD errors when trying to restore your Asus laptop by the F9 key
after migrating from HDD to SSD or by accidently modifying your partitions, this video will show
you how to perform a Windows Recovery of your system to restore the computer back to factory
defaults.

Important: This process does NOT fix your F9 Asus recovery mode. It is an alternative method to
restore your computer through Windows Recovery mode; this method does not rely on Asus
recovery mode.

In order for this process to work you will need:

- Restore OEM Recovery Partition (~20.01GB) (As long as you did not delete this partition, this fix
should work for you)
- At least ~20GB of free space on your hard drive
- A USB or DVD disks + External DVD Drive
- EaseUS Partition Master Free (or equivalent partition manager)

This alternative method avoids BSOD errors such as:

0xc0000225

Asus Laptop featured in this video:

S400CA

This method may also work with other manufacturers' laptops who have specified their own
function keys to initialize a propriety recovery mode.

The easy way (when the f9 dosent work)
Straight boot from recovery partition

"You can use the bootsequence command in bcdedit to specify the boot manager entry to be
used for the next boot only. The system then resumes booting to the {default} boot manager
entry thereafter."

1. Open cmd.exe as administrator

2. Type REAgentC /info [enter]
3. From list copy number ID of BCD (something like this: 3ga348a9-aca6-12f3-a561-
c2344434a7b2)
4. Type bcdedit /bootsequence {3ga348a9-aca6-12f3-a561-c2344434a7b2} [enter]
5. Then reboot Windows. After that laptop boot to ASUS Preload Wizard

Worked for me with Asus Zenbook ux31a

+CanadianDavid316 Im stuck here too.
I tried to do a recovery from one i saved to see if I could find a deleted file, but the recovery
failed, leaving e with just the F9 options. However, I get the same message as Mr Castro here.
WHen I try to run system repair it tells me the partion/disk is locked. So no where to go but
Command line. I could always download a copy of win8 and install it again, but wait, the damn
product key is hidden i BIOS so you cant download one either. This computer is getting very close
to getting shot in the face hahah.
Any tip?

+Tom Erik Hansen If you have the OEM version of Windows 8, or 8.1 (you didn't mention what
you had originally) on disc, you don't need to know the key. The OEM version of the correct
product will read the key from BIOS, and you're all set. Important note: You have to use a
Windows 8 OEM disc if you originally had Windows 8 when you purchased the machine, or
Windows 8.1 if that's what the laptop came with. Don't expect other versions of Windows 8/8.1
to read the CD key (ie. A volume license version from Microsoft, or a TechNet version, etc.). I
purchased an OEM disc (you can only usually purchase this when you assemble your own PC) for
the purpose of freshly installing client's laptops, and it works rather well. It's a clean installation,
so don't expect it to be exactly as it was when you opened the box. If you really want to know
the key, there are tools that will read it from bios.

I will recommend a better technique that will work. With some Brand name systems such as Dell,
Asus etc. They protect the drive so you have to enter your Bios setting such as pressing delete to
enter it then within they Bios change some feature that allow you to regain the option to factory
reset when you press F9
** Disable Secure Boot
Enable Launch CSM

Go to Boot to UEFI mode then save then F9 will work

What about if I just copy the recovery partition(the final step) Go to control panel, create
recovery disk with the copy recovery partition selected? Will this work even if I haven't made a
copy of the recovery partition with an actual drive label? I am doing it right now and it seems to
be working. ? Why need to copy the partition and assign it a letter?
My F9 gets to the reset computer screen and then says recovery partition missing. No blue
screen. Just no function, I think I resized one of the other partitions on my computer is why

Side note. is 16.2 GB on my flash drive it's not the full 20 gb that the recovery partition is. I'm
going to try it now and see what happens... If it works I'll let you know in a cpl hrs, if it doesn't
work I'll be back in a cpl mins.

dism /apply-image /imagefile:[path to .wim] /index:[number of index] /applydir:[where your

for swm files add a switch of /swmfile:[path to swmfile]*.swm

Usually swm files are numbered.Leave off the numbers and use the * (wildcard operator) to
indicate any files of this name.

What do I do when I made a mistake and unplugged my Asus laptop during a factory
resetting??? How do I start over or get back to where it left off??! My computer keeps saying the
computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered and unexpected error. Windows installation
cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the
installation.
But when I hit OK it says the same thing again. What do I do???

After being forced to upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10, my ASUS ROG G751JY stops loading the
preloaded Win 8.1 and ROG software in the recovery partition. This is after I did the factory
default reset. It was OK last year when I did the same reset when this laptop was on Win 8.1.
Now, no more preloaded ASUS software. The F9 reset didn't give back Win 8.1, it just wipes out
clean and gave Win 10. Now, I'm having problems with the drivers. So, tiring now... and looking
everywhere for a solution.

I hope somebody will help me here.

Well, as a gift, my parents gave me Asus X55C, a f*ckin uncommon model in here, in Poland. First
problem is it was bought in ITALY... it came with everything in italian and it was a serious problem
since I speak only English, polish, and spanish. So basically both the system and the boot options
such as recovery, refreshing system and others were italian. I was using it normally after
downloading polish language pack for system - Windows 8 x64 Pro, and then I remember I
changed something in bios while I was completely drunk - it caused no boot. Ok, so it was
packed and sent to the seller (private person here in PL, I suppose it was bought in IT cheaper
and sold for a lil bit more. So it came back working as it should, I remember that I installed
Windows 8.1 update. And after some time I did something again and I was that mauch pissed off
I installed Windows 10 preview (because I dont know italian a bit so i couldnt use restore or
recovery options, I was too afraid to break something) and it was working just flawless before
the updates started, many many things stopped working or was working not the way it should.
So I wanted to do a fresh installation of Windows. After tries, some blood, tears, liters of sweat
and thousands of curses it came out I need legal Windows 8 Pro OEM x64, I of course found my
license key which is not necessary, because it is stored in deep BIOS. But I have no way to find
the clean image I need on web, and also I tried everything to run recovery, but of course it
doesnt work. Now I did copied the recovery partition and I am wondering how to boot from it,
because in bios I have 2 options - Windows Boot or something close and my DVD drive. I am very
tired of fighting both Windows and Asus, and if anyone knows the solution to restore the
recovery image I have on real and / or copied partitions, please give me hint how to do it.
I would be very very graceful for that good deed.

Maybe you better fight with your own alcoholic habits when dealing with important software?
In any case, I can help you with italian, if you still need help with the language.

Hi friend, thanks for this very nice tutorial, but I'm still having problems...
I follow the steps, just like you make, but in the end the check box of the recovery tool is still not
available for me (as well as the F9 recovery tool).
I found a difference in my recovery files and (I guess) in yours. Apart from the 20GB restore
partition, I have other two, with 350 and 600MB with recovery files (I'm not sure if the are part
of Asus recovery).
I also copied them to new partitions and splited them together, but is still not working.
When I run Asus backtracker, it asks me to insert a 253GB (yes, that's it) flash drive, while with
other people it asks for only 14-20GB (that's what I read in forums).
Any idea of what is going on? Any suggestions? I think I already made everything possible based
on your method... HELP PLEASE!!

When i buy a laptop i take it out of the box plug it in and do all the updates then i clone the hard
drive that came with the laptop. Once it's done cloning I take out the hard drive that came with
the laptop and then I put in a SSD drive that has all my files and I put the hard drive that came
with it in a non-static package so it won't get ruined so if i get a virus I just take out the SSD drive
and then I deleted all the stuff that's on it and then I copy it back from the original hard drive of
the laptop. Nowadays hard drives are so cheap so by 50 Dollar hard drive and you're set.

What if I can't logg into my laptop? I have the exact laptop as the one you have here (with
windows 8 already installed).... I recently reset to the default factory settings, and used a
different Microsoft account when entering my stuff upon the restart. However, when I went to
logg onto my laptop, it won't logg me in. (I've checked to see if the microsoft account I used was
blocked, but it was not.) So, I'm trying to reset it again, but f9 won't open up the option to. (It
simply fails to load, and brings me to the windows lock screen to where I have to login again,
where as you can see, is my problem.) I assume you know that this laptop does not have a CD
compartment.... so I'm stuck. Do you think you can help me out? Is there a way to reset through
the laptops Bios?
CanadianDavid316

So your problem isn't with the laptop starting up, but it is with getting into Windows because
your username/password isn't working? If the account you are trying to sign in to is a Microsoft
account you can try to reset the password online. If it is not a Microsoft account, do a search for
other alternatives to getting into your account.

I could be wrong, but if you partition the SSD cache again it should be okay as caches are filled as

Hi Darrin, it seems the restore partition is locked somehow by the manufacturer. I am unaware

Hey David!

CanadianDavid316

I'm not aware of doing that directly. But I know for certain that you can create a Windows
Recovery Drive or CD from another Windows computer and boot up from it on your laptop.
Since you want to restore your Windows 8 OS you should probably make the Recovery Drive on a
Windows 8 computer. However, you should first try Asus' F9 recovery method. If you have
overwritten the recovery partition when you installed Windows 7 I'm afraid there isn't too much
you can do to recover your OEM Windows 8. Goodluck!

Give this process a try; other Asus notebooks should be formatted the same. You might want to

What you are seeing is actually an underscore ( _ ) and it likely means your OS has been seriously
damaged or possibly, the BIOS is booting off the wrong partition or location. Check the BIOS
boot options and if it checks out, then you can try doing a repair via a Window 8 Recovery Drive
or a Windows 7 Restore Disk which can be made from another Win8 computer. If all these have
failed, you may be out of options and you will have to buy another copy of Windows 8.
