RESUMEN
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
nacionales debieron haberla recibido.

There is a wide range of opinions regarding the indications and the need for antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry. In the last years different
guidelines regarding antibiotic prophylaxis were published to prevent the growing antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this study was to describe
the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in a sample of patients undergoing tooth extractions in 2013 at Clínica Universidad del Desarrollo-La Florida,
Santiago, Chile to evaluate if prophylaxis used in this clinic matches international and national standards. 898 electronic medical records of
patients undergoing tooth extractions were analyzed to describe the use or not of antibiotic prophylaxis. 76% matched national and international
standards, however 14% of patients received an unnecessary prophylaxis, and 10 % of the patients were treated without prior antibiotic therapy,
although according to the international and national standards they should have received it. Most indications matched the international and
national criteria, although a slight tendency to overuse was observed.
