Natural Rights Diderot
As a group, decide on a common layout, font and
background. Your slides should be easily readable. Social Contract Rousseau

Natural Law
Natural Law are rules of conduct discoverable by reasons.It was used by
Europeans to have a better understanding of social, economic, and political
problems.Natural Law caused the Scientific Revolution to lead to another
revolution in thinking known as, Enlightenment.
Voltaire
Against slave trade and deplored religious justice.
Natural Rights
Natural Rights are rights that everybody has from birth. It is the right to life, liberty,
and property. The idea of Natural Rights were mentioned by John Locke who had
a more optimistic view of human nature.John thought that humans were basiclly
reasonable and moral.
Diderot
Diderot worked for years to produce a 28-volume set of books called the
Encyclopedia.His purpose was “to change the general way of thinking”
Montesquieu
Time Period & Nationality: 18th century/1689-1755 & French

Montesquieu’s beliefs affect the Framers of the United States Constitution.


Montesquieu also created what we call as checks and balances. Also
advanced his idea of Separation Of Powers.

His “privileged status” was a challenge for Montesquieu to become a voice


for democracy.

Montesquieu’s birth name is Charles Louis de title Baron de Montesquieu.

Born to wealth.

Rousseau
Time Period & Nationality: 18th Century/1712-1778 & Swiss

Rousseau was a huge influencer to the political and social thinkers for
almost 200 years. Also, Rousseau promoted Social Contract.

The “unequal distribution of property” was a huge objection to Rousseau’s


thinking.

Rousseau felt that society placed too many limitations on people’s behavior.

Rousseau’s bold ideas would help fan the flames of revolt in years to come.

Adam Smith
Time Period & Nationality: 1723-1790 & Scottish

Adam Smith was a Scottish Philosopher and a political economists of the


Age of Enlightenment, and one of the key figures in the Scottish
Enlightenment.

Adam Smith’s theory (“TMS”) had been challenged by many and tends to
arouse sharply divergent reactions.

Smith is an anti-reductionist.

John Locke
Time Period & Nationality: 1632-1704 & English

Father of Liberalism, Social Contract, Consent of the Government

His writing influenced Rousseau and Voltaire and other well-known


philosophers.
Thomas Hobbs
Nationality/Time period: 16-17century - English

* Believed in powerful government


* wrote a book titled - Leviathan
* he argued that people were naturally rude , greedy, and
selfish .
* his ideas were the key to enlightenment.

Nationality/Time period: 17 century British social critic
* she felt that women were being excluded in the social
contract .
* she was fighting for women's rights .
* she wanted education for boys and girls .

Social contract

An agreement by which people gave up their freedom to a


powerful government in order to avoid chaos.
