SHOULD GAY MARRIAGE STAY LEGAL?

The many people of the LGBT+ community have been cut from basic human rights

attaining to the idea of same-sex marriage, being shunned for who they are. A mere part of the

character or sexual preference is known as a mental illness to others. A marriage of the same sex

should be legal because people should be entitled to marry whomever that person loves and

denying a certain person to marry another of the same sex, is discrimination. Marriage is also

internationally seen as human rights for all people. Many of these people of the LGBT+ group

have faced inhumane treatment and deserved the law in which allows them to marry whom they

love even if it is a person of the same gender. The fact that human rights were denied to people

with different sexual preferences before the year, 2015, is unbelievable, as everyone should be

allowed to marry whom they love

A person should be allowed to marry whomever they love because denying him/her/them

that right is discrimination. When a person receives the “privilege” of marriage, whom they love

should be allowed to marry them. Before the year 2015, when Supreme Court officially declared

same-sex marriage across the nation, many states had already legalized this to an extent.

However, some states denied that right and there were few states to FULLY agree to same-sex

marriage because the law was legalized to some degree. Nisha Chittal, Sahil Kapur, Joel
Connelly, and David S. Cohen of the first pro on “procon.org” had wrote “...serves only to hurt,

to discriminate, to deprive same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity, to label and treat

them as second-class citizens, and to deem them unworthy of participation in one of the

fundamental institutions of our society." Making same-sex marriage is to prevent hurting the

LGBT community and discriminating people of that community. Legalizing the law does not

hurt heterosexual families nor make them any less human. The law was set in place to bring

equality between the nation and citizens, no matter their sexual preference. Ergo, by not allowing

this law to make its impact, it deprives a whole community of their natural right as humans.

Making an emotional impact on families and others to see that homophobia affects more than

just homosexual humans, but the whole nation and the people who support LGBT+.

Throughout the world, marriage is also internationally seen as human rights for all people

no matter their sexual preference. Open-minded people have accepted the concept of same-sex

marriage and view this abstracted idea as a human right because you marry whom you love, not

the things you love. John Earnest quoted Obama on President Obama Supports Same-Sex

Marriage saying “We need to recognize that people are going to have differing views on

marriage and those views, even if we disagree strongly, should be respected.” The former

president who helped legalize this law is in full support for people of the gay community and

realized it is a basic human right to love whomever. In other words, if someone does not agree

with a person of a different sexual preference, it is passable, but do not bash on the said person

because that person is not of the norm. This also emotionally ties many persons as feeling
accepted for who they are, is a rarity. Hence, this law joyfully coincides with the happiness of

people within LGBT+ and feeling unopposed is a thought unheard of, until now.

Many of these people of the LGBT+ group have faced inhumane treatment and deserved

the law in which allows them to marry whom they love even if it is a person of the same gender.

Over many years people have been pushed aside because of who they are because they were not

considered normal at the time or to that person. Gay marriage has overcome many issues

throughout the past century. Families involved with someone of the LGBT+ community were

greatly impacted just by the legalization of same-sex marriage. This was so great for the families

because now the family is in a happier environment. Since there is no evidence where the law is

disgraced in the present, more as to how people thought of gays in the past. In Love is love: How

same-sex marriage became a right in the United States By ShareAmerica they have stated

“‘courage of millions of people across decades who stood up, who came out. stayed strong and

came to believe in themselves and who they were and slowly made an entire country realize that

love is love.’” Obama had also said this quote, applauding the many people in the LGBT+

community for fighting for the same-sex marriage rights before the law was legalized as he

understood the battle was harsh and long. The families are happy, the people of LGBT+ are more

than grateful and everyone in support of the law is so relieved because this law was a

monumental turn in history that is for the better because it is for equality. Many of our

Democratic leaders such as Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders had believed in this law.

Many of the followers of those leaders had also believed in this law because in the long fight for

equality there was justice for LGBTAQ+.

On the contrary, marriages are traditionally known between man and woman. Since

always, there has been man and woman marrying to having children. It was not until the late

20th century when people would come out as gay and not be thought to have a mental illness.

Many people know tradition and stick to it forever. A lot of people do not like change, so as the

customs altar, the people who are used to the traditional man and woman, tend to resent the main

reasons of the changing world. Nonetheless, this is insufficient to the major issue because

eventually, everything will change, for the better or worse. A person should not lash out at

someone who is different than another as there is no reason to treat someone as inferior or

victimize them for something as simple as sexual preference. Tyler Oakley was quoted saying

“so happy to see marriage equality in all 50 states... I'll never forget today. thinking of all the

incredible LGBTQ+ icons who paved the way” by Tanya Somanader in Live Updates on

#LoveWins: The Supreme Court Rules that Gay and Lesbian Couples Can Marry. A lot of

people are ecstatic the option to marry the love of their life is legal.

Ultimately, this is a controversy that should be widely accepted because of no matter

sexual preference, humanity are still humans with valid feelings. Coming together to defend the

act of legal marriage would be a way to solve the issue of homophobia. As the people can see

that since same-sex marriage is greatly sanctioned, the people seeing flaws in a gay marriage,

will no longer believe those are real problems as the persons could feel more comfortable

knowing that homosexuals are gay being gay. Consequently, the marriage of the same sex should

be legal because people should be allowed to marry without criticism as denying a person to

marry another of the same sex, is discrimination. Furthermore, marriage as a whole is also
internationally seen as human right for everyone. Moreover, lots of these people in the LGBT

society have faced barbaric treatment, therefore deserve this law in which allows them to marry

whom they love even if it is a person of the same gender. All in all retaining to why the law

allowing same-sex marriage should be welcomed and continued.

The pro description has sources of many other authors and includes their own paper on the topic.

This has the upper hand as the latest update was in July of this year [2017]. These sources relate

to my topic on gay marriage and how it should be legalized because these authors wrote articles

in which they explain the act of gay marriage and such. Just as one of the sources was a former

governor stating that in history, people fought discrimination, in other words, she is for it, just

am I. “serves only to hurt, to discriminate, to deprive same-sex couples and their families of

equal dignity, to label and treat them as second-class citizens, and to deem them unworthy of

participation in one of the fundamental institutions of our society." Basically means that making

the same-sex marriage is to prevent hurting the LGBT community and discriminating people of

the community.

“Live Updates on #LoveWins: The Supreme Court Rules that Gay and Lesbian Couples Can

Marry” By TANYA SOMANADER, JUNE 26, 2015 AT 10:17 AM ET:

The article is essentially addressing the people proud of the same-sex marriage law is passed.

This group of people support the concept of #lovewins and are very thankful. This is relatable to

the gay marriage legality for this proves the number of people who support same-sex marriage.
This also shows how gay marriage is not a negative effect on the lives of others because so many

people benefit from this law. Tyler Oakley said “so happy to see marriage equality in all 50

states... I'll never forget today. thinking of all the incredible LGBTQ+ icons who paved the way”

The struggle of what many people of the LGBT community had gone through prior the

legalization of same-sex marriage. This also shows the gratitude of what someone in the LGBT+

community has for having the opportunity to marry whomever they love in whatever state of

America they are in.

https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/blog/2012/05/10/obama-supports-same-sex-marriage

This article by Josh Earnest is addressing former President Obama opinion on gay couples. This

article also shows the fact that a lot of people in his [Obama] life are, in fact, are gay and go

through a struggle for not being with the law essentially. Thus, in relation to the argument of

how gay marriage should be legalized. The former president who helped legalize this law is in

full support for people of the gay community and realized it is a basic human right to love

whomever you wish. “We need to recognize that people are going to have differing views on

marriage and those views, even if we disagree strongly, should be respected.” This quote is of

support to the same-sex marriage law, in other words, if you do not agree with someone of a

different sexual preference, that is OKAY, but do not bash on the said person because they are

not of YOUR norm.

The source is a page speaking of the states and territories. Also showing when said states became

on board to same-sex marriage. This is in relationship to the topic of same-sex marriage because

it shows the willingness of states to come to having same-sex marriage as well as who was on

board before the law was enforced. This page shows what the courts had gone through prior

setting law into place, giving us information about the states and what had happened. This page

says “2. Title XVI claims For Title XVI claims, appeals, and post-eligibility actions, also refer to

GN 00210.800.” This refers to what acts went into place to legalize the gay marriage law.

The article speaks of the law of gay marriage and how it has overcome many issues throughout

the past century. The article also mentions the first human rights group to the recent fight in the

supreme court in 2015. This is in favor to gay rights because it mentions how the families

involved with someone of the LGBT+ community and how legalizing same-sex marriage was so

great for them and how it made their family in a more happy environment. Also because there is

no evidence where the law is disgraced in the present, more as to how people thought of gays in

the past. “‘courage of millions of people across decades who stood up, who came out. stayed
strong and came to believe in themselves and who they were and slowly made an entire country

realize that love is love.’” Obama had said this quote, applauding the many people in the

LGBT+ community for fighting for their rights before the law was legalized because he knows

the battle was long and hard.
