0 SETTLEMENT OF PILE
The settlement of pile under vertical load is caused by three factors.

Total settlement "S" = S1 + S2 + S3

where
S1 = Settlement due to elastic shortening of pile shaft.

S2 = Settlement of pile caused by the load at the pile point.

S3 = Settlement of pile caused by the load transmitted along the pile shaft.

1.1 SETTLEMENT OF PILE DUE TO ELASTIC SHORTENING

OF PILE SHAFT. (S1)
S1 = Qwp + s x (Qws) x L
Ap x Ep

where
Qwp = Load carried by End Bearing in KN
Qwp = 0 KN

Qws = Load carried by Friction (Skin Resistance) in KN

Qws = 1358 KN

Ap = Area of pile cross section in m 2

Ap = 0.28 m2

L = Effective pile length (m)

L= 17.000 m

Ep = Young's Modulus of the pile material

Ep = 15000 MN/m2
Ep = 15000000 KN/m2

For Triangular distribution of skin friction along pile

shaft
s= 0.67

Substituting the values in above equation:

S1 = (0 + 0.67 x1358) x 17
0.28 x 15000000

S1 = 0.00368 m
S1 = 3.68 mm
1.2
SETTLEMENT OF PILE CAUSED BY THE LOAD AT THE
PILE POINT (S2)

S2 = qwp X D (1-Ms2) Iwp

Es

where
D= diameter of pile in m
D= 0.60 m

qwp = Point Load per unit area at the pile point in KN/m2 = Qwp / Ap
Qwp = 0 KN
Ap= 0.28 m2
qwp = 0 / 0.28= 0 KN/m2

Es = Young's Modulus of soil at or below the pile point

Es = 300000 MN/m2

Ms = Poisson's ratio of soil (0.3-0.45 for very dense sands)

0.3

Iwp = Influence Factor = 0.85 - For Circular Foundations

Substituting the values in above equation:

S2 = 0 x 0.6(1- 0.3 x 0.3) x 0.85

300000

S2 = 0 m
S2 = 0 mm

1.3 SETTLEMENT OF PILE CAUSED BY LOAD TRANSMITTED

ALONG THE PILE SHAFT (S3)
S3 = Qws x D x (1-Ms2) x Iws
P x L x Es

where
Qws = Load carried by Friction (Skin Resistance) in KN
Qws = 1358 KN

D= diameter of pile in m
D= 0.60 m

Ms = Poisson's ratio of soil (0.3-0.45 for very dense sands)

0.3
Iws = Influence Factor = 2 + 0.35 (L/D)0.5
L = Effective pile length (m)
L= 17.000 m
Iws = 2 + 0.35 (17 / 0.6) 0.5

3.86

P= Perimeter of pile in m = 3.1416 x D

3.1416 x 0.6= 1.885 m

Es = Young's Modulus of soil at or below the pile point

(Taken Half of Es for soil strata
Es = 150000 KN/m2 variation)

Substituting the values in above equation:

S3 = 1358 x 0.6 x (1-(0.3 x0.3)) x 3.86

1.885 x 17 x 150000

S3 = 0.0006 m
S3 = 0.6 mm

Total Settlement = S1 + S2 + S3

where
S1 = 3.68 mm

S2 = 0 mm

S3 = 0.6 mm

Substituting the values in above equation:

S= 3.68 + 0 + 0.6
S= 4.28 mm

Total calculated Settlement = 4.28 mm

Allowable settlement in pile = 6 mm

Since 4.28 < 6 Hence SAFE

Since calculated total settlement < Total Allowable Settlement, Settlement criteria
satisfied.
