Statement of the Problem

This research aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy,

scientific reasoning skills and academic performance of the Senior High School

students in Public Secondary High Schools in Cuyapo District during the

School Year 2017 – 2018.

Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age ,

1.2 sex ,

1.3 academic awards / honors received ,

1.4 year level ,

1.5 SHS Track / Strand ,

1.6 parent’s educational attainment, and

1.7 annual family income?

2. What is the level of self – efficacy of the respondents?

3. What is the level of scientific reasoning skills of the respondents?

4. What is the academic performance of the respondents?

5. Is there a significant difference in the level of self – efficacy and

scientific reasoning skills across socio-demographic profiles of the

respondents?

` 6. Is there a significant relationship between the level of self-efficacy,

scientific reasoning skills and academic performance of the

respondents?
Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses will be tested in its null form using 0.05 level of

significance

1. There is a significant difference in the level of self – efficacy and

scientific reasoning skills across socio-demographic profiles of the

respondents.

2. There is a significant relationship between the level of self-efficacy,

scientific reasoning skills and academic performance of the

respondents.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Data obtained from the respondents will be analyzed using statistical tools

such as descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Correlation and Multivariate

ANOVA.

The socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of age,

sex, awards / honors received year level, SHS track / strand, parents’

educational attainment and annual family income will be described using

descriptive statistics specifically frequency counts and percentages.

Average Mean, Weighted Mean and Standard Deviation will be obtained

using descriptive statistics to determine the level of self-efficacy and the five

levels of scientific reasoning skills. The self - efficacy of the respondents will be

described using the following:

High Self - Efficacy 3.40 - 4.00

Average Self - Efficacy 2.21 - 3.40

Low Self - Efficacy 1.00 - 2.20

The scientific reasoning skills and its five categories will be described

using the following:

Well – Skilled 3.76 - 5.00

Satisfactory Skilled 2.51 - 3.75

Fairly Skilled 1.26 - 2.50

Poorly Skilled 0 - 1.25

Descriptive statistics will be used to describe the academic performance of

the respondents, which will be categorized with the following descriptors:

Outstanding 90.00 – 100

Very Satisfactory 85.00 – 89.99

Satisfactory 80.00 – 84.99

Fairly Satisfactory 75.00 – 79.99

Did Not Meet Expectations Below 75

Independent T-test will be used to determine the difference in the

self-efficacy level and scientific reasoning skills level between males and

females and year level while Multivariate ANOVA will be employed to

determine the difference in self-efficacy level and scientific reasoning skills

level across age, the different tracks / strands in Senior High School, academic

awards / honors received, parent’s educational attainment and annual family

income.

Finally, to determine the relationship of the respondents’ level of

self-efficacy, scientific reasoning skill level and academic performance in

Science, Pearson Product Correlation will be employed.
