ME 422 Fluid Mechanics II (3 CH)

Course Introduction
The general objective is to provide students with a basic understanding of fluid element kinematics; differential forms of continuity and
equations of motion; Euler’s and Navier-Stokes equations and their methods of solutions; flow over immersed bodies, boundary layer,
drag and lift; introduction to Gas Dynamics; one-dimensional isentropic flow of gases; introduction to turbomachinery; basic energy and
angular momentum considerations; affinity laws of pumps and turbines; wind turbines.
Course Contents
1. Differential analysis of fluid flow:
Fluid element Kinematics. Conservation of Mass. Conservation of Linear Momentum. Inviscid Flow. Some Basic Plane
Potential Flows. Superposition of Basic, Plane Potential Flows. Viscous Flow. Some Simple Solutions for Viscous
Incompressible Fluids.
2. Flow over immersed bodies:
General External Flow Characteristics. Boundary Layer Characteristics. Drag. Lift.
3. Compressible flow:
Ideal Gas Relationships. Mach Number and Speed of Sound. Categories of Compressible Flow. Isentropic Flow of an Ideal
Gas. Nonisentropic Flow of an Ideal Gas.
4. Turbomachinery:
Introduction. Basic Energy Considerations. Basic Angular Momentum Considerations. The Centrifugal Pump. Dimensionless
Parameters and Similarity Laws. Axial-Flow and Mixed-Flow Pumps. Fans. Turbines.

Administrative Instruction
 According to institute policy, 80% attendance is mandatory to appear in the final examination.
 Assignment sessions and quizzes will be scheduled on Wednesday from 12:30 to 13:3 weekly in FME examination hall.
 There will be no retake quizzes and assignment sessions.
 Attendance will be checked within 5 min from start of lecture, and then door will be locked.
