Part – B Max.Marks:50
ANSWER ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRIES 10 MARKS.
11. a) Discuss the machine design process with an example [4M]
b) A mild steel shaft of 60mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of [6M]
3000N-m and a torque T. if the yield point of the steel in tension is 200MPa,
find the maximum value of this torque without causing yielding of the shaft.

12. a) What are various design guidelines for minimizing the effect of stress [4M]
concentration? Explain.
b) A leaf spring is an automobile is subjected to cyclic stresses. [6M]
The average stress = 150Mpa. Variable stress = 500Mpa;
ultimate stress = 630Mpa; yield point stress = 350Mpa and
endurance limit =150Mpa.
Estimate, under what factor of safety the spring is working, by Goodman and
Soderberg formulae.

13. a) The bolt in the flange coupling should be made weaker than the other [4M]
components of coupling, why?
b) Select a key for a 100mm diameter shaft transmits 750kW at l000rpm. The [6M]
allowable shear stress in the key is l00MPa and the allowable compressive
stress is 200MPa. What type of key should be used if the allowable shear
stress is 30MPa and the compressive stress is 120MPa.

14. a) Write short notes on leaf springs. What is the advantage of leaf spring over [4M]
helical spring?

b) Design a helical compression spring to carry a load of 1.5kN with a [6M]
deflection of 40mm. Spring index of 5. Allowable shear stress is
400N/mm 2. Modulus of rigidity is 80KN/mm 2 .

15. A bracket is attached to wall by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at [10M]
B as shown in figure. Assuming that the bracket held against the wall and
prevented from tipping about point C by all four bolts. The allowable tensile
stress in the bolts is 40MPa. Determine the size of the bolts on basis of
maximum shear stress theory.

16. An ISA 200x100x10 mm angle is welded to a steel plate by means of fillet welds [10M]
as shown in figure. The angle is subjected to a static force of 250 kN and
permissible shear stress for the weld is 80 N/mm2. Determine the length of the
weld (given Y2=71.8 mm). Also determine the size of weld.

17. Design a muff coupling to connect two shafts transmitting 40KW at 120rpm. The [10M]
permissible shear and crushing stress for the shaft and key material (mild steel)
are 30Mpa and 80Mpa respectively. The material of muff is cast Iron with
permissible shear stress of 15Mpa. Assume that the maximum torque transmitted
is 25 percent greater than mean torque.

18. a) Derive the expressions for failures in a simple double strap butt riveted joint and [4M]
its efficiency.
b) Two plates 5 mm thick subjected to a 20kN tensile force are joined by a double [6M]
riveted double strap but joint. The permissible stresses for plates and rivets in
tension, shear and compression are 80, 60 and 120MPa respectively.

ii) width of plates
iii) efficiency of joint
