(441) Sir James Campbell of Ardkinglass, died 1591.Will recorded 12th June
1591 at Edinburgh. He married Elizabeth, daughter of the Laird of
Lawers, and had issue :
(442) Sir John Campbell of Ardkinglass, married, 23rd July 1571, Annas,
daughter of Colin Campbell of Glenurchy, and had a son :
(446) Sir James Campbell of Ardkinglass, second Baronet, died 5th July
1752, aged 86, when the title became extinct. Will recorded 31st March
1756 in Stirling. He married first, Margaret, daughter and
co-heiress of
Mr Adam Campbell and heiress of Gargunnock, by whom he had three
daughters. The eldest daughter, Helen, married Sir James Livingstone
of Glentirran, whose eldest son succeeded to the Estate of Ardkmglass.
He married second, Anna, daughter of Sir John Callendar, of Graigforth.
He was M.P. for Argyllshire 1702-07, as heir of Ardkinglass. He sat m
the first Parliament of Great Britain, M.P. for Argyllshire 1708-27, and for
Stirlingshire 1734-41.
HrmS recorded 1672-77.— Gyronnj/ of eight, gold and black, within a gold
bordure. Crest A black lymphad with oars in action. MOTTO " Set on."

(448) Robert Campbell of Auchawillan, who was dead before 30th March
1540, had two sons:

(454) Niall or Neill Campbell of Auchawillan, served heir to his father ajth
October 1734. Married Margaret Campbell of Otter, and had two
sons :
(455) NiALL Campbell of Auchawillan, served heir to his father 25th October
1734, and died at Auchawillan 22nd March 1779. He married Margaret,
daughter of John Campbell, fourth of Otter, by his second wife, Jane
Stenhouse (Contract dated 21st May 1752), and had two sons:

{b) James Campbell, living 19th December, 1774.
(456) Iain Campbell of Auchawillan, who died nth October 1820. He married
a daughter of Archibald Campbell of Springfield. He sold the estate.

(470) Colin Campbell of Ardentinny, son of No. 436, b, died in 1510, had
probably two sons :
(477) Colin Campbell of Ardentinny, who called himself nephew and apparent
heir to Donald Campbell. He married Anna Lindsay, daughter of Mr
George Lindsay of Blakholme, and had three sons :
in saltire proper. MOTTO " Terra, mare, fide" [Plate V., fig. 4.]

(484) Matthew Campbell, Captain of Skipnish, who was killed at the siege
of Dunaverty, July 1647, on the first day of the siege, and was buried by
the MacLavertichs, with whom he had been fostered, in their own burial
ground. On his tombstone in the old Gaelic church of Campbeltown is
an inscription: "His Cause of Fight was still Christ's Right." His son
was probably :
(i) Duncan.

(488) Angus Campbell, Captain of Skipnish, married first (Contract dated i6th
September 1682) Jean, daughter of Sir James Stewart of Kirkton, and
had:

He married second, before i8th August 1699, Elizabeth M'Alistar.

(489) Captain Colin Campbell of Skipnish, born 1690; died s.p. 26th April
1756. He married his cousin Anna Campbell.
(490) Donald or Daniel Campbell, first of Shawfield, third son of No. 487,
born 1670. His seal is on the Treaty of Union, and has crossed oars as crest,
as cadet of Skipnish. He died at Woodlands, 8th June 1753. He was
M.P. for Glasgow 1716-34, and for Inveraray 1702. He married first,
1695, at Glasgow, Margaret, daughter of John Leckie of Newlands, and
had:—

\b) Walter Campbell, Receiver of Customs, married 2nd November
1728, Marian, daughter of Sir James Campbell, thirteenth of
Ardkinglass.
{c) David Campbell, drowned
in the Clyde, unmarried.
He married second, 4th April 1714, at Edinburgh, the Hon. Katherine
Erskine, daughter of Henry, Lord Cardross, and had a daughter.
(491) John Campbell of Shawfield, born 1696, died at Kilsyth 22nd July
1746. He married first, 30th August 1728, Lady Margaret Campbell,
daughter of Hugh, Earl of Loudoun, and second, 20th April 1735, Lady
Henrietta Cunningham, daughter of William, twelfth Earl of Glencairn.
She died 5th May 1774 at Edinburgh, leaving issue:

Orchard.
(497) John Campbell of Orchard, retoured heir to his father, 3rd March 1705.
He married Anne, daughter of Colin Campbell of Kinnochtree, and had
a daughter. " He was the last of the male line of the ancient family of
Ardkinglass, and died 7th May 1768."

(498) Archibald Campbell of Rachean, whose Will is recorded ist January
1685 at Glasgow, descended from Ardkinglass, had a son:

Campbell, second Laird of Ardkinglass (No. 437). He was living in

was M.P. for Dunbartonshire 1639-41 and 1648. He married Agnes,
daughter of Campbell of Ellangreig, and had issue :
(517) Colin Campbell, Fiar of Carrick, designated of " Duchlage," died before
6th July 1627. He married (Contract dated at Dunbarton 6th October
1610) Annas, daughter of Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss, and had three
sons:
(518) Duncan Campbell, Captain of Carrick, bom 1614. He was M.P. for
Dunbarton 1639-41. He married Anna, daughter of Duncan Campbell
of Duntroon, and had a son :

(519) Sir John Campbell, Captain of Carrick, born 1639, and was M.P. for
Argyllshire 1669-74, 1678, 1681-82, and 1689-1702. He married first
(Contract dated 14th March 1674), Christian Eliot, and had:
(a) Duncan Campbell, Fiar of Carrick, died v.p. before 1695.
{i>) Captain Robert Campbell, was dead before 1709. He married,
1st August 1694, Jean, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell of
Ardkinglass, Baronet, and had three sons :
(520) Sir Iain Campbell, Captain of Carrick, was retoured heir to his grand-
father i6th October 1722, and was killed at the Battle of Fontenoy
1745. He married first, 3rd July 1724, at Paisley Abbey, Magdalen,
daughter of Cochrane of Bollinslaw, but this marriage was annulled. He
married second, 9th December 1725, Jean, sister of the fourth Duke of
Argyll, and had issue :
(a) John Campbell, born 24th October 1727 died March 1728.

(526) Duncan Campbell of Kilbridemoir was the third son of Duncan, fourth
Captain of Carrick (No. 516). He was dead in December 1640. He
married at Greenock Kirk, loth March 1626 (Marriage Contract in Argyll
Charter Chest), Jean, daughter of Humphrey Noble of Ardardane, and
had:

5t. Catherines.
Inan MS. of the eighteenth century at Inveraray this family is stated to
be Cadets of Ardkinglass, but the link has not yet been discovered, or its modern
representative.
In another MS. they are stated (with Succoth) to be Cadets of Barbeck.
Which is correct? Or were there two distinct families which have been confused
together?
At Kilmacolm there is a tombstone to the memory of Duncan Campbell, son
of Patrick Campbell of St Catherines and to Janet Buchanan his w^ife.
(566) Donald Campbell of St. Catherines, died before 1753, had a son :
(567) Donald Campbell of St. Catherines, died at Glasgow 31st May 1786.
He married first, 21st January 1765, Margaret Campbell, and second,
Sarah, daughter of Patrick Forbes. He had issue :
(568) Captain Patrick Campbell of St. Catherines, born about 1779; died
at Tours, France, 25th June 1859. He was in the 49th and 48th Regi-
ments, and apparently Lieutenant-Colonel of the 95th in 1837. He
married Sarah Robbins, and had :

(569) John Campbell of Glasgow, living 1615, descended from Ardentinny.
Married Margaret, daughter of Archibald Lyon, and had a son :

and 20th June 1680. He married first, Margaret, sister of Sir Archibald

Office 1871-74 and 1880-82, Secretary to the Admiralty

(734) Margaret Campbell, Baroness Loudoun, born about 1605, was served
heir portioner, along with her sister, Elizabeth, to Sir Duncan Campbell,
Knight, great grandfather of Sir Hugh Campbell, Knight, great grand-
father of Sir Matthew Campbell of Loudoun, their great grandfather, in
the lands of Benderloch in Argyllshire, on 22nd November 1626. She
married, before 8th March 1620, Sir John Campbell of Lawers (No. 237).
She appears to have inherited the Peerage under a resignation made by
her grandfather in favour of her husband, Sir John Campbell of Lawers,
who was recognised as Lord Loudoun, as she is designed spouse to
John, Lord Loudoun, in the service by her to Sir Duncan Campbell in
1626. He is so called in the Patent of the Earldom in 1633. (For
continuation see No. 237.)

(739) Sir George Campbell of Cessnock, retoured heir to his father sth
March 1691. He was Lord Justice Clerk, and died 1704. He was
succeeded by his daughter Margaret, who married, 29th July 1697,
Alexander, second Earl of Marchmont, who assumed the name of Camp-
bell, and quartered the Campbell Arms with his own.
(740) Captain Hugh Campbell of Barquharrie was the third son or grand-
son of SirHugh Campbell of Cessnock and Elizabeth, daughter of George,
Master of Loudoun. He married, 5th June 1702, Margaret, daughter of
David Boswell of Auchinleck, and had issue :
(744) Hugh Bruce Campbell of Barquharrie, bom 8th April 1803; married
first, Anne Hurd of Kentish Town, by whom he had no issue. He married
second, October 1832, Elizabeth, daughter of E. Werge of Hexgrave
Park, Nottinghamshire.
Skerrington.
Note. —
This family claims to be descended from the same stock as the
Campbells of Argyll and Loudoun. The early part of the genealogy
of the family is somewhat imperfect, and the first who is distinctly
ascertained by Writs in their possession is :
(757) John Cajipbell, advocate, succeeded his father in 1725, and resumed the
designation of Skerrington. He was admitted a burgess of Ayr in 1739.
He married Wilhelmina, daughter of Lieutenant - General Sir Andrew
Agnew, Bart, of Lochnaw, Governor of Timmouth Castle, by whom he
had one son. In 1763 he went to Little Cessnock to reside, and changed
its name to Skerrington, the original seat of the family. He was succeeded
by his son :
(758) John Campbell of Skerrington, died s.p., and was succeeded by his
sister Eleanora, who married Charles Maxwell of Cowhill, Dumfriesshire,
from whom the present family of Skerrington is descended.
Qlasnock.
On the authority of an old manuscript at Gilmilns Croft, Robertson stated
the Campbells of Glasnock were the last in the entail of Lord Loudoun,
1613, but how descended from that family cannot be discovered.
(767) George Campbell of Croonan, served heir to his father 1647-48. His
lands were erected into a barony. He died in 1670, leaving a son :
(768) George Campbell of Croonan, served heir to his father 1671. Will
recorded 17th December 1700. He sold the estate before 1700, and
died s.p.
(769) Alexander Campbell of Balgersho, married, i6th June 1629, Elizabeth
Campbell, daughter of Patrick Campbell, and had a son :

1658, and to his great-grandfather. Registered Arms, 1672-78, as grand-
