ASSIGNMENT 1/ECS238/226/MAC-JULY 2018

ASSIGNMENT 1

Introduction

An Influence Line is a graphical tool that can be used to determine the effect of
multiple different loadings on a single structure. A bridge is an example of a complex
structure that will have many different loading cases. For example, if a single truck
travels across the bridge, the loads in the bridge will change as the truck moves from
one side of the bridge to the other.

In a proposed 30 m span bridge across Sg. Indah in Sarawak is to be designed to

carry a maximum moving load from trucks. As an Assistant Engineer, you are
required to assist in the analysis of a proposed bridge design as shown in Figure
1(a), when it is subjected to a moving truck as detailed in Figure 1(b). The analysis
will consist of the determination of the support reactions, shear force and bending
moment of the bridge deck.

ASSIGNMENT 1/ECS238/226/MAC-JULY 2018

Tasks/Activities

The assignment is developing student ability to design solutions for well-defined

technical problems related to the application of influence line in bridge analysis.
Student should provide the design of system, parameters involved to meet specified
needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal,
and environmental considerations. Following are required tasks:

A. Idealize the support condition and free body diagram for the bridge deck and
discuss the factors of selection such as structure idealization. Identify the
number of reaction for the bridge deck.

B. Considering the moving load of 1.0 unit and the applied at 5 salient points
across the length of the beam. Based on the identified free body diagram, solve
and construct the influence line diagram for:
i. Reaction at all support.
ii. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
iii. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam

C. Determine the location of the truck on the bridge deck, so that the magnitudes of the
reaction forces, the shear force and the bending moment is maximum.

D. Prepare the standard technical report that consists the following:

i. Introduction of the problem including the picture of the Sg. Indah bridge
ii. Sketch the free body diagram of the bridge deck.
iii. Solution of the influence line for:
a. Reaction at all support.
b. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
c. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam

iv. Influence line diagram for:

a. Reaction at all support.
b. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
c. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam

vi. Calculation of the maximum magnitude of the following due to the moving
truck on the bridge deck:
a. Reaction at all support.
b. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
c. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam

vii. References

viii. Appendix (if any)
