ASSIGNMENT 1
Introduction
An Influence Line is a graphical tool that can be used to determine the effect of
multiple different loadings on a single structure. A bridge is an example of a complex
structure that will have many different loading cases. For example, if a single truck
travels across the bridge, the loads in the bridge will change as the truck moves from
one side of the bridge to the other.

Tasks/Activities
A. Idealize the support condition and free body diagram for the bridge deck and
discuss the factors of selection such as structure idealization. Identify the
number of reaction for the bridge deck.
B. Considering the moving load of 1.0 unit and the applied at 5 salient points
across the length of the beam. Based on the identified free body diagram, solve
and construct the influence line diagram for:
i. Reaction at all support.
ii. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
iii. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam
C. Determine the location of the truck on the bridge deck, so that the magnitudes of the
reaction forces, the shear force and the bending moment is maximum.
vi. Calculation of the maximum magnitude of the following due to the moving
truck on the bridge deck:
a. Reaction at all support.
b. Shear force at two-third span of the beam
c. Bending moment at the mid-span of the beam
vii. References
For the written part, report should be in the Times New Roman, 12 fonts with 1.5
spacing. The references list must follow the 6th Edition of APA Referencing Style.
