Jump Start: Getting Started with aspenONE ® PIMS Platinum

Introduction
aspenONE PIMS Platinum is changing planning with an easy-to-use, web-based, flowsheet environment. Visualize
constraints, evaluate economics by asset, adjust the plan, and see its immediate impact. aspenONE PIMS Platinum allows
you to run planning cases and modify data on the flowsheet, making it easier than ever to identify refinery processing
opportunities and share data. The software can easily be launched from Aspen PIMS™ and accessed from any web-
enabled device for better supply chain visibility.

This is not meant to be used as a stand-alone reference document. AspenTech recommends that a range of other
resources be referenced to give the new user a comprehensive view of how to use aspenONE PIMS Platinum. These may
include:

• AspenTech support website (support.aspentech.com)

• AspenTech courseware available in online and in-person versions
• AspenTech Business Consultants
• Help center available within aspenONE PIMS Platinum
This guide covers getting started with aspenONE PIMS Platinum, beginning with how to generate a flowsheet from within
Aspen PIMS. See how easy it is to learn a whole new way to plan!

Generating a Flowsheet
After running your model in Aspen PIMS, click on the aspenONE PIMS Platinum icon on the toolbar and select Generate
Flowsheet.

Figure 1: Select Generate Flowsheet

A confirmation notice will appear indicating the flowsheet is being generated (Figure 2).

Figure 2: Auto-configure flowsheet

Once the flowsheet is complete, it will open an option for editing in the aspenONE PIMS Platinum environment (Figure 3).

In order to begin configuring the flowsheet, click on the pencil icon to the right of the flowsheet name (Figure 3).

The aspenONE PIMS Platinum Flowsheet editor (Figure 4) is used for project configuration. It helps map Aspen PIMS and
sub-models to aspenONE PIMS Platinum using a standard or process model.

There are multiple options for configuring the flowsheet, including:

• General
• Data Source
• Case Sets
• Group Assets
• Additional Features

Figure 4: Edit flowsheet environment

As information is entered or specified, make sure to save changes using Apply to remain on the screen or Save to save and
exit. The user will be prompted to save changes with a symbol that appears by the page navigation pane indicating a save
step needs to be performed prior to moving to another step.

General
The General screen is used to specify a flowsheet name and description. The flowsheet name then appears in the
Flowsheet list, as shown below.

Figure 5: Naming the flowsheet

Data Source
Use the Data Source screen to connect to the database used as the foundation for the flowsheets. When generating a new
flowsheet, the active Aspen PIMS model is linked as a data source by default, as shown in Figure 6 below.

Figure 6: Data source selection

For existing flowsheets, multiple data sources can be added. Doing so retains defined case sets, as well as allocated
assets. This allows you to create a base flowsheet with standard group assets and attach a modified results data source.
Doing so allows you to roll data forward without having to redefine flowsheet components and dashboards. All current
data can be reviewed on a previously defined flowsheet. Data sources can be edited using the icons on the right-hand side
of the window (Figure 6).

Case Sets
Case sets can be created under the next selection. Case sets allow the user to customize how to group cases more easily
and how to quickly analyze data. The user can assign the same case to multiple case sets.

As a default, aspenONE PIMS Platinum automatically creates case sets with cases that have similar names (Figure 7).
These sets appear in the Defined Case Sets pane. After case sets are created, they can be modified, removed, or have
additional case sets added.

Figure 7: Define case sets

Group Assets
Use the Group Assets tab to assign sub-models/equipment to process units. The options on this screen are used to group
assets in logical groups that will be displayed on a flowsheet. Only assets assigned to a group will appear on the flowsheet.
Assets left in the Unallocated Equipment Pane will not appear.

The Auto-Allocate option enables the system to use rule-based logic to determine assignment of equipment to groups.
Rules are based on common English naming conventions used by industry experts when labeling and defining process
units and associated sub-models/equipment. When generating a new flowsheet, group assets are auto-allocated as a
default.

Allocating Units
Units can also be manually allocated by the user for multiple reasons, including units that are unallocated, units allocated
incorrectly, or units that the user wants to allocate differently. The following scenarios will address each of these issues.

Unallocated Units
Any unallocated units will appear in the column under Unallocated Equipment. To allocate the unit, click on the unit and
drag and drop it into the appropriate group asset.

In this case, one of the crude units – SNSP – needs to be allocated with the other crude units (Figure 8). Click on the
unallocated unit, and drag it to the Crude Unit group asset. Once completed, the unit will be reflected as part of the
correct group asset (Figure 9).

Jump Start: Getting Started with aspenONE ® PIMS Platinum

Incorrect Allocation
At times, a unit may need to be reassigned to a different group asset as it was not auto-allocated correctly.

In the following example, one of the units – BCPR – was incorrectly allocated to the Gasoline Blender group asset (Figure
10). In order to allocate it correctly, click on the unit and drag and drop it to the correct group asset. Once the change is
made, the BCPR unit is now allocated correctly in the Distillate Blender group asset (Figure 11).

Reorganizing the Allocation

In another instance, the user may want to adjust the allocations to better reflect the refinery model.

In Figure 12, the planner wants to assign two of the crude units into a separate group asset.

Figure 12: Crude units to be reallocated

In order to create a new group, click on Process Unit Icons and all available group asset options will be listed. Select
the new group—in this case the crude unit—and drag and drop it onto Flowsheet listed at the top of the process units
(Figure 13).

Figure 13: Create new group asset

The new crude unit assay group will appear at the bottom of the allocated equipment list. In order to move the desired
units to the new group, click on the selection and drag and drop the units into the new group asset (Figure 14).

Once the necessary changes have been made, click Save. The flowsheet status will then change to Draft State, meaning it
cannot be opened by another user on the same machine.

After a flowsheet has been published, the Draft State is removed and any other user with the right access can open the
flowsheet.

Additional Features
The Additional Features tab lists any additional options that may have been added to the model. In Figure 15, the option to
run cases in aspenONE PIMS Platinum has been selected.

Figure 15: View available additional options for the model

Once the configurations are saved, the flowsheet is generated and available for viewing (Figure 16).

Dashboards
Dashboards are blank canvases where data access objects such as charts, graphs, and tables can be defined and created.
aspenONE PIMS Platinum allows for nearly every data element within the database to be reportable in many different
ways. It also allows for data manipulation functions to be created and applied against specified data elements. Created
data access objects are dynamic and updated with each successive model run.

Note: Dashboards must be saved to a layout to persist with the displayed data. If a dashboard is closed without saving
to a layout, the user will not be able to retrieve the data or the dashboard.

To create a new dashboard, click on the Add icon in the upper right-hand corner of the window, then select Insert
Dashboard. The Dashboard tab will be added and the window will be blank by default. While the Dashboard tab is selected,
click Edit then Insert Chart or Insert Table (Figure 17).
