MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL ACADAMIC YEAR 2017-2018 Background An electric circuit is a path in which electrons from a power source flow through. The point where those electrons enter an electrical circuit is called the "source" of electrons. The point where the electrons leave an electrical circuit is called the "ground". Circuits can be classified into three different types: simple circuit, series circuit, and parallel circuit. A simple circuit is a closed path composed of a power source (battery), wires, and a resistor (light bulb) connected together. A series circuit is occupied with more than one resistors in which the current flows in only one path making all components carry the same amount of current and will stop function if the path is incomplete. The components in parallel circuits are similar to those in series circuit but the current flows in multiple paths so other the paths can still be operated even if there is an incomplete path. Introduction In our bedroom, there are many electric device that run by the electricity. Our group decide to create a bedroom in order to understand how the circuit system works in real life propose. In our bedroom, we will create a lightning system, fan, and other decoration. First, the fan will be created by using a motor and a blade. We will connect the motor through the wire and connect it to the switch and the battery. The energy from the chemical reaction in the battery will convert to electrical energy and come out of the cathode side to the anode side. The current will move through the wire into the motor. Inside the motor, there are magnetic field created by a north magnet on the left and a south magnet on the right. The current that move across the magnetic field will create a magnetic force. Magnetic force equals to current multiply by the the wire length and cross product with the magnetic field. Hence, this force will create a rotational movement. So the chemical energy in the battery will convert to electrical energy and the electrical energy will be transformed to mechanical energy. Furthermore, we need to perform a soldering in order to connect the wire with the battery, motor, and switch. We connect the switch by putting the wire from the battery and the wire from the motor inside the switch and connect them. We decide to make a series circuit system for the fan because we only have one resistor, which is the motor. Later, we will solder all the lighting systems together and connect them to the switch, then we will connect the switch to the battery. We connect each light together in a parallel circuit system because in parallel the voltage is equal. Objective
To create a model that will
demonstrate physics concept about circuits so that it would be useful for class demonstration.
To add on to the idea of UV
lights and invisible ink on the decoration for the model. Design
At first, we thought we could make a dinning
room but we changed our mind and decided to make a bedroom instead. Design
In the bedroom, we decided to create two types
of lights which are LED blue light and yellow light. Also, we decided to add a fan to represent the rotational motion. Physics Concept
The motor and the light bulb represent as the
resistor. The battery represent as the energy source. In this project we have both parallel and series circuit. We connect the light bulb in parallel circuit and the motor in the series circuit. The motor function is to transform the electrical energy to mechanical energy. Inside the motor, there is a magnet which it create a magnetic field. Therefore when there is a current pass across the magnetic field, there will be a magnetic force. This force create a rotational motion on the rod of the motor, so by connecting the turbine to it. We create a fan. The switch job is to turn the circuit system on and off. We connect the switch by put the wire from the motor and the wire from the battery inside the switch and connect the left over wire together by using the soldering machine. Materials 5 wooden boards A4 Papers 26 UV LED lights 1 yellow light 3 switches Wires Pieces of Cloth Cotton Sponge 12 Batteries 3 Battery covers Flowers Motor Fan Blade Cardboard CD Clear Cover Solder Equipment Color pencils Black & White Spray Color Black Marker Super Glue Glue gun Scissor Cutter Invisible Ink Soldering iron Set-up TOP Set-up FRONT Set-up SIDE Procedure 1. Cut some of the wooden boards into pieces for the furniture such as the bed, the wardrobe, the desk and the fan base. 2. Spray all the pieces with black and white spray color. 3. Use pieces of cloth stuffed with cottons to make pillows and stuffed with sponge to make the mattress. 4. Create decorations for the room such as picture and mosaic frames, laptop, and flower vase using A4 paper and colors. 5. Construct the room with 4 big wooden boards. 6. Build the furnitures using the small wooden pieces we cut. 7. Decorate the desk with the vase and flowers we made. Procedure 8. Assemble a fan by attaching the blade with the motor and put it onto the wooden base. 9. Punch holes on the top wooden boards for the UV LED lights and the yellow light. 10. Build 3 separated circuits: one for the fan, one for the UV LEDs, and one for the yellow light. 11. Connect the components like the motor and the light bulbs to their switch and batteries. 12. Attach the furnitures and decorations with glue gun. 13. Draw pictures on the floor, the walls, the wardrobe, and the headboard of the bed. 14. Put the clear cover in front of the wooden box. Final Product Final Product Data Analysis of Data As the data shows above, our group confronted many problem such as the short circuit that caused the light to burn out, the motor turbine that didn’t connect to the metal rod very well and the confusion of how to connect the switch to make it work. We all as a group discussed and tried to figure out together how to solve these problems occurred. We learned many things from doing this project due to these failures. It was a lesson that would make us know and remember how to solve this problem if it occur in our life again. Conclusion The project was done successfully. We finished it in time and it came out as what we planned at first. There were some problems with the lights because some of them weren’t working. In addition, we didn’t have some materials and tools, so we need to go out and buy them. We were able to show the concept of electric circuit in a way that is not boring. We constructed many trials and caused some errors but it eventually turned out quite well. Still, there are some issues such as the voltage of the batteries that didn’t match exactly with the connected lights which can cause the lights to burn out. Recommendation
If we got a chance to redo this project
over again, it might be better to prepare all of the materials and equipments since the beginning so that we can spend time more wisely when we have a work day at school. Also, we should calculate the voltage of the resistance before we actually try making the circuit in order to buy a correct amount of batteries and not to burn down the LEDs with too much heat from the power given by the batteries.
