We have the expression :

f(x)=x³-3x²-3x-4.
To get maxima or minima we differentiate the equation with respect to x and
equate it to 0.(slope is zero at maximum or minimum)
f'(x)=3x²-6x-3=0
=> x²-2x-1=0
=> x= 1+2√2 or 1-2√2
 1+2√2 = 3.828
1-2√2= -1.828.
Both lie in the interval (-5,5)

Now to find which of these is maximum and which one is minima .

We find f''(x)and find its value.
f"(x)=6x-6.
At x= 3.828 f"(x)= 16.97>0
Which implies that the slope is increasing when one goes to left or right of that
x. And hence at x= 1+2√2 we have minima.
At x=-1.828
f"(x)=-16.97.
Which implies that he slope is decreasing for neighbouring points of x and
hence at x= -1.828.
The function reaches the maximum value .
Thus , f(x) is maximum at x= 1-2√2.
