Title of Presentation: The SAVE Program: USAID-Funded Cultural Heritage Conservation in Cyprus
Abstract : The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting
economic growth in the Turkish Cypriot Community (TCC) to foster a durable settlement in Cyprus. In 2005
International Resources Group (IRG) won the $10.1 million contract to establish the SAVE (Supporting
Activities that Value the Environment) Program. In addition to Cultural Heritage Conservation, major SAVE
activities include environment and natural resources management and capacity building and geographical
information systems (GIS) for improved land use planning.
Cypriot cultural heritage is extremely rich from the Neolithic Period onward with important Classical,
Lusignan, Venetian, and Ottoman Period sites. SAVE's cultural heritage goals include:
Capacity building and technical assistance in cultural heritage resource management and protection,
Design and implementation of demonstration training projects on significant conservation subjects,
Cultural heritage documentation and database,
Carrying out of long-term conservation projects on historic sites,
Cultural heritage and landscape heritage tourism promotion and sustainable development activities,
Public outreach, including public lectures, books and other publications on cultural heritage resources
management, impact and benefits.
