Objectives:

• TSW compute and construct using various manipulatives and strategies, an addition problem adding 10
to a one digit addend.
• TSW write number sentences to model their addition problem and model using manipulatives.

Lesson Plan:
• Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Focus/Motivation):
The students will be asked to sit on the carpet and they will watch a short video introduction over adding
10 to another number.

• Information Giving:
“What did you see in the video? The video was adding 10 to another number!” Talk to the students about
how the video went over the previous learned math lesson of counting on and using mental math.
Go over the objectives with them and what they will be doing for the day.
-We can write number sentences and model our math.
-We can add 10 to a one digit addend.

Let the students know that we will be continuing addition and adding 2 addends together. We are going to
make it a little bit more challenging today by adding 10 to another addend like we saw in the video.

Model to the students under the document camera using 10 rod manipulatives and the 10 frames and
counters.

Check for Understanding

Students will write on their dry erase board and show to me their answers with a given number sentence that
the teacher will give to them under the document camera. They will write the two “twin” addition sentences
along with the correct sums in both vertical and horizontal form.

• Guided Practice:
Students will be shown their activity sheets and the teacher will demonstrate how to cut out the
answers and that they will find the sum to the problem and glue it down on the sheet. Demonstrate to
them that they should get their counters out and their 10 rods. They will use a 10 rod and some counters
to help them add their two addends together to get their sum. Under the document camera show to the
students the problems and model how they use the 10 rods and cubes to get their answers.

Check for Mastery

While the students are working, walk around and make sure that they understand how to use their 10
rods, counters, and how to solve their problems and get the answers.

• Independent Practice:
Students will work on their addition cut and sort activity sheet using their counters and their 10 rods.

• Assessment/Evaluation:
While students are working on their whiteboards, observe them writing their number sentences and using
the manipulatives that are on the board and document camera.

As students are working on their activity sheets go around the classroom and observe the students
computing the problems, using their manipulatives, and constructing their sums to their addition
sentences. Students will turn in the activity sheet so that the teacher can look that the correct
computations were made for their sums.

• Closure / Culminating Activity:

Students will be asked to pick up their trash, put their glue and scissors away, and turn in their work. They
will also put away math manipulatives, or the teacher will pick them up.

• Enrichment/Extension:
Students who finish early will be given another addition activity sheet. The activity explores giving the
students the sum and the students will need to locate the correct corresponding addition sentence.

• Reteach:
Students will have the concept reviewed again with them the next day.

• Modifications:
The students will restate their answers to me and for those who need the handwriting modeled I will work
to model it with them.
