Tennis, swimming, football and artistic gymnastics. All of these are characterized as

sport, an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes

against another. However, if the subject is about golf, this definition is questionable for some

people who consider golf as a game. Consideration misleading, once in a game the rules are more

flexible and it can easily be changed, while golf has universal rules and a governing confederation.

Firstly, golf meets the definition of the word “sport” found in many dictionaries as given

in the last paragraph. In fact, golfers develop physical and perceptual skills in order to achieve

their goals. Although the main argument to the contrary is the fact that golf is an activity engaged

for amusement, this fails because any kind of sport is played for pleasure, not for obligation.

Secondly, golf’s demand for physical exertion often results in injuries. Since improving

performance involves constant practice, golfers spend hours training to develop their skills.

Contrary opinions says that non-sport activities lead to injuries, however they are not constant

activities in a short period of time as is usual in golf. Finally, golf has many more commonalities

with other sports. As in other sports, golf has been attached to championships, remunerations and

television coverage. Some people say that it is necessary to have hand-to-hand contact to be

considered as a sport; however, we have known sports such as swimming are independent of this.

Therefore, golf can be understood as a sport by involving physical effort, constant practice

that leads to injuries and it has much in common with other sports. Just understand the concept of

game and sport to realize that golf is undoubtedly a sport.
