1. General.

This specification covers the minimum requirements of surface preparation and galvanizing of steel
structure used for BTS (Telecommunication).

2. References.

2.1. Customer Specification

2.2. British Standard BS729 or ASTM A123: Hot Dipped Galvanized Coatings of iron and Steel
Articles” A Minimum weight of 610 g/m2 of Zinc shall be applied.

3. Applicable Items

4. Fabrication

4.1. Care should be taken to avoid fabrication techniques which cause distortion or embitterment
of the steel items.

4.2. All welding slag and burrs shall be removed prior to delivery to galvanizer.

4.3. Holes and/or lifting lugs to facilitate handling, venting and draining during the galvanizing
process shall be provided at positions as agreed between manufacturer and galvanizer.

4.4. All strengthening gusset on fabricated columns and channel sections should have corners
cropped to allow free flow of zinc during galvanizing process.

5. Galvanizing Process

5.1. Incoming a) “Bare Articles”

5.2. Weighbridge a) Acknowledgement receipt of good, and weight

5.3. Jig/Fixture System a) Tie/Hang articles on to galvanizing system

5.4. Degreasing to remove grease a) Caustic Soda solution with a concentration of 10% tp

15%, at 45 deg – 70 deg C; PH 11-14.

b) 10 minute minimum immersion time depending on


degree of contamination.

5.5. Rinsing a) Using water to remove degreasing agent.

5.6. Pickling to remove rust a) Using Hydrochloride acid at 16% (max) PH 4 (max).

b) 15-30 minutes immersion time depend on acid strength

and rust condition.

5.7. Fluxing – Stop rusting a) Using Zinc Ammonia Chloride solution at 15%-20%

Concentration and at temperature of 45 deg–70 deg C.

b) Hydrometer to measure specific gravity.

5.8. Drying Pan a) To remove moisture/wetness in article

5.9. Dipping in molten zinc a) Min 6 minutes at temperature of 430 deg-450 deg C.

5.10. Quenching to freeze Zinc Coating a) Quench in dilute solution of sodium dicomate (10% at

30 deg C).

6. Repair

6.1. Bare spot and affected areas are cleaned by grinding and patch up with ZINC RICH PAINT.

6.2. Excessive roughness will be smoothened by hand tool grinding.

7. Inspection

7.1. Yusonda’s Inspector will be present at galvanizing yard to witness the galvanizing processes
and also to verify the zinc coating thickness.

7.2. Checking of film thickness is by means of calibrated thickness meter.

8. Documentation

8.1. Test certificates shall be provided stating that the galvanizing complies with BS 729 or ASTM
A 123.

8.2. Thickness of Zich coat shall be recorded and documented.

9. Documentation

Galvanizing contractor shall ensure that all operators are provided with face shield, semi leather
gloves, safety boots and cotton based jackets as personel protection.
