crews gain control of the 53-hectare chat-
away lake fire. 20 firefighters on scene
today focusing on final suppression ef-
forts & mop up.
Funding for invasive
species study
the prov gov’t has provided trU with
$300,000 over the next 3 years for invasive
species research. the money will go to
lauchlan fraser, a biological sciences pro-
fessor and his research team to help man-
age invasive species in the laurie guichon
Memorial grasslands near Merritt.
fraser will work with a number of
trU faculty researchers, graduate stu-
dents and external organizations, to
mainly look at how to manage spotted
knapweed and cheatgrass in the laurie
guichon Memorial grasslands. they will
also be looking at how grazing cattle in
the area may be used to help fight the
spread of invasive plants.
research is slated to start later this sum-
mer. currently, fraser and his team are
mapping out the area where they’d like to
test. the group will also be working with
the nicola Watershed community round
table, a group devoted to maintaining the
area’s biodiversity and engaging in strate-
gic resource management.
