PINEAPPLE: AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF ENERGY

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Though it’s certainly not a practical way to light our home, we can generate electricity from fruit. The
acid in fruit interacts with electrodes to create a small amount of voltage. Creating a fruit battery is an
interesting experiment to try.

Its proven over and over that you can make batteries out of fruits and vegetables .Pineapple is usually
abundant in tropical countries. Turns out, pineapple is acidic enough to power battery. The chemical
substances in fruits, particularly acidic fruits can be converted into energy.

Pineapples are delicious tropical fruits, which have been celebrated for centuries not only for their
unique taste but lo for their miraculous health benefits. Pineplle, is also known as ananas, is a delicious
tropical frut surrounded by thorny spikes and topped with hard, waxy leaves that are sometimes up to
thirty per fruit.

Bromeliaceous family and is actually a composite fruit made of coalesced berries that grow t the crown
of a fruity tree. The name pineapple evolved in the 17th century due to its structure and pineapple
evolved in the 17th century due to its structure and appearance being similar to pine cones.

Historically, the term battery referred to a device composed of multiple cells, however, the usage has
evolved additionally to include devices composed of a single cell.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study seeks the feasibility of producing electricity out of pineapple instead of using batteries.

Sought to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a way to produce electricity to light-up a bulb using pineapple?

2. What is the level of effectivity of pineapple as alternative source of organic light energy.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Coming up with this study is quite useful to some people. This study talks about the significance of using
pineapple different from the common source of electricity. With the developed product, students as
well as houses can produce light without the availability of electric current from the main source.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

The researchers followed a standard procedure in making a simple circuit. In this research, passion fruit
was subjected to produce a free light energy. To strengthen this study, the team utilized materials that
could help making a simple circuit.

There is no comparative study between the effectiveness of the commercialized source of electricity and
the free light energy from the pineapple.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the procedure used in conducting study. It gives details on the progressive
development of the study that was conducted in a step by step procedure.

Materials :

Pineapple, stranded wire, alligator clips, LED bulb, Pieces of GI sheet, 5 centavo coins, cutter.

Procedures :

1. Prepare all the materials needed. Set the materials in a clean working space.
2. Insert the 5 centavo coin and the small sliced of GI sheet into the pineapple. The 5-centavo coin
serves as the positive and the sliced of GI sheet serves as negative. Note, that the two
terminals will not touch each other.
3. Connect one wire each to the electrode and anode.
4. Connect the loose alligator clip on the wire from the zinc cathode to the terminal on the base of
the bulb or the positive terminal of LED bulb. Connect the loose alligator clip from the copper’s
anodes wire to the threads of the bulb or the negative terminal on the LED.
5. Increase the power available by adding another slice and connecting it to the series with the set-
up.
6. If there is still not enough power, you can continue adding slices in series.
7. Measure the voltage between two electrodes or current passing through voltmeter. Record it in
the voltmeter.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

The table below shows the result of the trials conducted:

Table 1: Volt reading of each set-up.

Set-up Volt Reading

1 slice of pineapple 0.89 V
4 slices of pineapple 2.51 V
6 slices of pineapple 3.30 V
8 slices of pineapple 4.20 V
10 slices of pineapple 5.04 V

The result shown that the different set-up using different slices of pineapple was tested, and based on
the result of the partial reading using digital multi-tester: 1 slice is 0.89 V, 4 slices is 2.51 V, 6 slices is
3.30 V, 8 slices id 4.20 V, and 10 slices showed 5.04 V. It shows, as the slices of pineapple increase, the
amount of voltage also increases that results into high amount of light produced by LED bulb.

CONCLUSION

The researchers therefore conclude that pineapple can be used to generate small amount of electric
current. By making a circuit using several slices can produce enough electricity to power small load of
such as LED light.

We also conclude that the number of slices may affect the amount of ight produce.
RECOMMENDATION

Based on conducted experiment, we recommend the following for further improvements;

1. Use different variety of pineapple.

2. Use multiple number of whole pineapples instead of slicing it, or just add number of
slices.
