House” sign, and you slip inside with others, a mixed
crowd of the curious and the interested.
Often, we who are inside the church forget how
intimidating church doors can be to those who have never
entered, or who may have departed years ago after a
bad experience. Some people may pass by our church,
knowing something related to God and spirituality takes
place inside. Some people may come to a point in life
where they are curious enough to want to take a peek

inside. And occasionally, some may even be bold enough
to walk through the doors to look around. But for many
people, their spiritual needs or curiosities aren’t enough
to overcome their reluctance, fear and questions. Are
people rolling in the aisles? Will I be stared at for being
new? Am I dressed correctly? Will I hear the same guilt-
laden message that turned me away years ago? Can I
speak “Methodist”?
It would serve us well to think about the real and
perceived barriers that people might have about entering
our church for the first time. This is a big and imposing
place. While we offer many points of entry, both
physically and programmatically, nothing is more effective
than a personal invitation. And nothing is more reassuring
to a guest then knowing that a friend is here to welcome
them, show them around, and connect them to others.
The warmth, thoughtfulness and personal touch of a
friend can make all the difference in the world.
Look around. Be alert to those who might be open to an
invitation from you. And when you see a new face around
here, greet them and welcome them. For the greeting we
offer is not simply a welcome to MUMC, but a welcome to
a place where they can experience the life-changing love
and grace of God in Christ.
UMW Scholarship for Women
Missouri United Methodist Women is accepting applications
for a $500 scholarship. Forms are available in the MUMC
office. This scholarship is for women who meet the
following criteria:
• Member/affiliate of MUMC
• Completed two years of study at an accredited college
or university
• Financial need
• Preparing for a career choice of ministry/helping
profession (teaching, medical related, etc.)
• Involvement in church related or community activities
Deadline for application: June 15
Scholarship will be announced no later than July 1.

July 12: VAC’s Christmas in
July Event at MUMC
Volunteers are needed to donate food and help serve
at the Annual Christmas in July Dinner to be held this
July 12 at our church. This dinner provides food for low
income families from 5:30-7pm that day. Santa will visit
and children will be entertained with craft activities.
Donations of children’s activity books,crayons, and cash
are also welcome. If you would like to be involved, please
contact Suzanne McDavid at 474-4416 or suzmcdavid@aol.
com, Mary Ouart at 446-2490 or mandmouart@aol.com,
or Pat Martin at 445-5603. This is the 27th year MUMC will
host this event for Voluntary Action Center!. The generous
donations of our members have provided dinner for 250-
450 and help Voluntary Action Center raise funds for basic
needs and emergency services for low-income citizens.
Whittler Hall Renovations
Starting next week, our pre-school area will be getting
a face lift! Whittler Hall, the Nursery Hallway and their
adjoining classrooms are all being refreshed to be safe,
functional and welcoming for all families. Many of these
spaces will be getting new furniture, cabinetry and
flooring, while other spaces will be refreshed with bright
colors and directional signage.
As a result, of these changes, PreK Sunday School will be
held in CLC 104 from May 27 to June 10. On July 15, these
classes will resume in Whittler Hall, as usual, once the
new space is finalized. Children’s Church, during the 9:15
service, will also be in CLC 104, but the Nursery will still
be held in W7.
Lastly, there will be no Sunday School, PreK-5, from June
17-July 8. If you have questions about this, please visit
with a representative at the Family Connector Desk.
NURSERY NOTE for Sunday, May 27: The Nursery will
be temporarily relocated to the Parlor (across from the
Sanctuary)
Open Door Hosts Movie Night
MUMC Open Door Ministry, in partnership with The Center
Project, will host a viewing of “Gender Revolution”
on June 12 at 6:30pm. This 2017 National Geographic
documentary, hosted by Katie Couric, explores the rapidly
evolving complexities of gender identity. The evening will
also include an opportunity for discussion and socializing.
Seekers Class Plans for June
On June 3, June 10, and June 17 the Seekers class will be
discussing Adam Hamilton’s new book, Unafraid: Living
with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times by watching a
DVD series based on the book. Hamilton offers a process
for helping people cope with fears based on crime, race,
terrorism, politics, failure, insignificance, illness, dying,
and other events. All people who struggle with fear and
anxiety or who have interest in this topic are welcome to
join the Seekers class at 9:15am in Room 302.

A great debate often occurs over the question of whether or not God causes things to
happen in our lives or responds with love and direction when they do.
REFLECTION: Reflect on a time when your life was touched by an unexpected event.
Reflect on how your response might have varied depending upon your understanding of
God’s connection to your life.
TUESDAY: Luke 13:1-5; 10-13 What is Sin?
The best explanation of sin is rooted in the understanding that sin is anything that
comes between us and a perfect relationship with God. A general Old Testament
understanding says that bad things happen to sinful people.
QUESTIONS: Consider your understanding of sin and reflect on these questions: Do
I wonder what I have done wrong when something bad happens? Do I wonder what
others have done wrong when bad things happen to them?

About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people
from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. “Do you think
those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?”
Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? Not at all! And you will perish, too,
unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. And what about the eighteen
people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst
sinners in Jerusalem? No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will
perish, too.”

WEDNESDAY: Luke 13:1-5; 10-13 Punishment for Sin
In this passage, Jesus asks a very pointed question: “Do you think those Galileans were
worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee? Is that why they suffered?”
REFLECTION: Jesus answers his question by saying, “Not at all!” Reflect on that
answer and reconcile it with your personal understanding of sin.
THURSDAY: Luke 13:1-5; 10-13 Faith or Answers
Sometimes there are no helpful answers to the questions we have about life and our
life circumstances. Always, faith is the key to helping us walk through troubled times.
REFLECTION: Reflect on a circumstance in your life in which you sought answers. How
did or could faith carry you through?

One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, he saw a woman who
had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen
years and was unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called
her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!” Then he
touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!

FRIDAY: Luke 13:1-5; 10-13 There is Never a Wrong Time to Heal

The religious law in the days of Jesus forbid any type of work on the Sabbath,
including healing. Jesus realized that the need of the crippled woman was greater
than the parameters of the law.
CONSIDER: Consider the story of the woman healed on the Sabbath. How could this
circumstance change not only her physical life but also her perspective on life? How
could the perspectives of the lives of the on-lookers been changed?

SATURDAY: Luke 13:1-5; 10-13 Forward Movement

When life-changing events occur both positive and negative, we are challenged to
move forward in our actions, our thoughts, our faith.
PRAYER: God of healing, you touch not only the needs of our bodies, but the needs of
our hearts, minds, and spirits as well. Help us to reach out in faith when life-changing
