THE SHELL MARK

For more than 100 years, the word Shell, our emblem of the scallop shell and the distinctive red and
yellow colors have represented the Shell brand and promoted our values and the quality of our
products and services throughout the world.

The word Shell was first used in 1891 as a commercial brand of kerosene sent to the Far East by Marcus
Samuel and Company. Originally, this small London company traded with antiques, curios and seashells
from the East. The shells became so popular (the Victorians used them to decorate jewelery boxes) that
they soon became the basis of the profitable import and export trade with the Far East.

Corporate status was conferred on Shell in 1897, when Samuel formed the Shell Transport and Trading
Company. The first logo (in 1901) was a mussel shell, but in 1904 it was changed to a scallop cocha (or
venera) as a visual representation of the corporate name and brand.

When the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and Shell Transport and Trading merged in 1907, the brand
name and the symbol of the second (Shell and scallop shell) became the abbreviated name and emblem
of the new Royal Dutch Shell Group . And so they have remained until now.

The shape of the Shell emblem has changed over the years, following trends in graphic design. The
current emblem was presented in 1971. After thirty years, it continues to stand the test of time and is
one of the most well-known symbols in the world.

The sound of Shell

Since the early twentieth century, Shell has used music in audiovisual communications, including
contributions by singers Bing Crosby and Sammy Davis Jr. In collaboration with the British composer of
film and television soundtracks, Tom Howe, in 2015 we launched the "Sound of Shell", a sound
signature that captures the values and energy of the Shell brand as a modern company that uses
innovation to help develop a sustainable energy future.

The result is a three-minute orchestral composition and a set of more than 50 variations with different
genres and musical styles. Each one is based on a central melody that can be expressed with many
different styles, using from aggressive electric guitars to adaptations to Thai or Turkish music. The
shortest expression is a two-second mnemonic sound (the main melody) that, for example,
accompanies the scallop shell logo at the end of the Shell films. We want, over time, everyone to
recognize it, just as everyone recognizes the logo.
