Within Our Homes
In manifolds, the planet’s waste such as unnecessarily
high carbon footprint, overflowing landfills, and an
increasingly negative impact on our economy are all
alarming. Government garbage disposal system is tested
ineffective all over the country. Around the globe, waste
management is not sustainable, thus all our problems to
bare and the need to solve it in our own little way is
much appreciated by our “Mother Earth”. In general, the
sources of these wastes are electronics, food, household,
and industry. To narrow it down which is within the grasp
of our control is the household waste where many
electronic products we had put to bin, plastics from
groceries, and packaging from products we bring home
with us all end up in the same bin. Household waste is of
great concern and is the source of this carbon footprint,
overflowing landfills or global warming. This is a bit of a
satirical proposal not to entirely get rid of this waste but
to put into perspective the right entity or institution who
have much stake to find the solution for us.

Players in the Dumpsites
Due to industrialization, urbanization and population
growth, a garbage generation of about 35,580 tons per
day is recorded. Visiting one in Cagayan de Oro
sometime 3 years ago, there are two major players in the
dumpsites. First, those who gather there and do some
sorting for available scraps to sell. Second, the hundreds
of manufacturers’ name attached or printed to each and
every scrap ranging from grocery bags to papers up to
packaging materials, biodegradable or not; from plastics
to styrofoam, and from tin can up to broken glasses.
Who are they? They are the great SM, Gaisano, Ororama,
Savemore, Jolibee, Chowking, McDonalds, Nestle, URC,
Coca-cola, Pepsi, Fortune, Marlboro, Samsung, Asus, GE,
Koppel, LG, Omni Electronics, Starbucks, Globe, Smart,
Crown, National Bookstore, Tide, Surf, Downy, Uni,
Dong-A, Pilot, and so many others. Of course those
unnamed plastic cellophane bags can be traced back to
the plastics manufacturers of this country.
Closing of Dumpsites
This is my first proposal : Nationwide closing of any
open or land fill dumpsites. Slowly, the smells of this
area will be gone forever and the chaotic view of it
will be erased in our memory. This will take us away
from the common third world country scenic
landscape of basurero and the basura world.
Incentives to Household Waste
My second proposal is to give incentives for
household waste. Every residence must perform
their own waste segregation on packaging
manufacturer basis. This incentive must be so high
which is up to 40% (rebate) of the purchase price
per manufacturer. Those with no manufacturer label
bare no price incentives at all. Therefore, household
consumers must purchase only those products with
the maker’s name printed on it to earn from their
waste.
New Dumpsites
All these collected garbage shall be dumped in front
of the manufacturer’s gate. If the manufacturer will
provide for a nice looking entrance bin then fine.
Nonetheless, it should literally be dumped on their
doorstep. Wouldn’t it be a conflicting scene of a pile
of used paper plates in front of Jolibee? Now,
manufacturers might get ahead by collecting the
garbage on their own from every residence and
outsource the collection for them. If that’s the case
then its fine, to avoid public embarrassment. But
where will they dump their garbage then when all
the dumpsites are already closed?
