Introduction:
Discussion (10 min)
ACADIAN COMMUNITY – NOVA SCOTIA INTRODUCTION 2

Call the students to the carpet and inform them that we will be learning about a new
province in Canada for the next month. At the end of every day, the students will be
required to fill out an exit slip stating something new that they learned about said
province like what they did for Saskatchewan. The sticky notes will be used again when
it comes to projects and final assessment later on. They will be continuing to take
responsibility for their own learning.
Video (10 min)
To introduce Nova Scotia to the students, play
1. Nova Scotia with Kids, YouTube (1:54)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6O8YSeG4Ps
What does Nova Scotia look like?
What did you notice about the land?
Write the students’ observations on a blank slide.

Body:
Geography (45 min)
Where is Nova Scotia on a map? (show a map)
Have them colour in Nova Scotia on their own maps.
What is the capital city of Nova Scotia? (Halifax; have them write it on their worksheet
in the blank space).
What are some other places? (Cape Breton Island, Meteghan, Glace Bay, Truro).
What does Nova Scotia’s flag look like? Go through the different parts and explain what
they mean (coat of arms, colours, ).
- The flag is a simple “figure-ground reversal” of the flag of Scotland (inverted).
- Blue cross of St. Andrew on a white background.
- The provincial shield (coat of arms) is Scotland’s coat of arms.
Use a diagram if necessary. Have them colour their own in.
Read “Information Card One” and answer the accommodating questions in the work
booklet.
MOVEMENT BREAK
Video (10 min)
Play “Kids Love Puffins, Seals, and Deep Sea Fishing in Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09o1_z0b7hg
Ask the students to pay attention to animals, land, and activities that you can do in Nova
Scotia.
Compare and Contrast (30 min)
Compare Peggy’s Cove (from the video) to Okotoks using sentences and drawings (in a
chart).
Need to have 3 things that are different, and 3 that are the same. Emphasize that they
need to write sentences.
After students have had time to draw and write things, bring attention back and have
students share what they came up with and add them to a slide on the board.
