INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Zambales Mountains,

located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac
and Pampanga, all in Central Luzon on the northern island of Luzon. Its eruptive
history was unknown to most before the pre-eruption volcanic activities of 1991,
just before June. Pinatubo was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from
view. It was covered with dense forests which supported a population of several
thousand indigenous Aetas.

Tourism plays a large role in the economy of Zambales. Local and foreign
tourist flock its many beaches creating many job opportunities and contributing
to the economy. Most of the province is still agricultural but there are
considerable industrial zones that provide jobs not just for residents of Zambales
but also for neighboring provinces. Mining has recently been booming in
Zambales where there is an abundant deposit of Nickel and other minerals.

Zambales is basically an agricultural province. The chief products are rice,

corn, vegetables, and root crops. Major industries include farming, fishing, and
mining.

Based on the current situation, the proponents came up with the idea of

constructing a port facility in Brgy. Porac Botolan, Zambales. Its purpose is to

import and export quarry materials, products and agricultural harvests in the area.

This will help the barangay and also the province to enhance their economic

growth. The investor also finds the area quit interesting where the source and the
setting of the port for transportation is already there. All have to do is to construct

structures and facility, invest and likewise will be helpful for the residents for the

coming opportunity in the future.

Objectives of the Study

The study aimed to achieve the following objectives:

1. Unavailability of major port in Brgy. Porac Botolan, Zambales for high

volume of transportation.
2. To assess less capacity of minor ports to import and export quarry materials,
products and agricultural harvests in Barangay Porac Botolan, Zambales
and determine solution.
3. To put up cargo movement from port of Brgy. Porac to the hinterland.
4. To construct facility that will sustain the availability of the quarry materials,
products and agricultural harvests in Barangay Porac Botolan, Zambales.

Significance of the Study

Generally, the study will provide insight for a tenable planning and design
of structures that cater to import and export quarry materials, products and
agricultural harvests. Specifically, it is deemed beneficial to the following:

Brgy. Porac Residents. The study would generate more labor

Botolan City Government. Bloom their tourism

Zambales Provincial Government.

Researchers. The study will provide insights into planning and designing

which may become basis for future investigations or projects.

Architects and Engineers. The study would give them additional knowledge

in planning and designing a port facility.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this study is to come up with a plan and design of a Porac port

facility that will utilize the availability of sand in the area and convert to raw

materials to be exported to the local areas in the country. It includes the

architectural and structural conceptualization and the site planning.

The study dwelt on the areas and boundaries that needs to be develop.

Upon assessment the researchers have planned and designed only the areas that

are available and already bought by the company. The design and planning

results were based on reviews from references, books and literatures and the

results of the photographic surveys conducted.
