MLA Style (8th edition): Examples

These are the core elements of any works cited entry. Repeat elements
3-9 as necessary for your citation.

 Works cited pages should be arranged alphabetically by author. If there is no author, use the title.

In-Text Citations

In-text citations are composed of the core element that comes first in the entry in the works cited list and a page
number.

Type Example
Basic in-text citation “Between the woods and frozen lake” (Frost 20).
Citing more than one work by Include a short form of the source’s title
the same author (Frost, “Stopping by Woods” 20)
Entry begins with the title The title may appear in the text itself or, abbreviated, before the page number in
parenthesis.
(“Star Wars” 101)
Identifying the source in the According to Joseph Ryan, “organized adaptive sports programs are increasingly
text available for individuals with disabilities” (32).
Works in time-based media Cite the relevant time or range of times
(Unboring 2:55-3:44)
