God Makes Everything
Genesis 1:1-19

A long time ago there was nothing but darkness. It is hard to

picture just nothing, but that is all there was ... except for God.
So God made light. That way there could be day and
night, instead of only darkness.
Then God made the earth and divided parts of it into
oceans and seas and other parts into big pieces of land.
God made all the plants and trees and made them grow
on the land.In the sky God made the stars and planets. He
made the sun and moon so there would always be a day
after every night.

It Looks Good
Genesis 1:20-25; 2:3-6

When God looked at all the water covering the

world He made big fish and little fish. Some were
too small to see.
For the sky He made large birds and small, in
many colors. They were bright blue, dark green,
brown, purple, red, black and white.
When He looked toward the land God saw
grass blowing in the breezes and ripe fruit
hanging from the trees. He knew it was
a good place for animals.

8
He made tiny bees and giant elephants,
crocodiles, sheep and lions, all different
sorts of animals. But they did not have
names yet. There was plenty of food and
water for them all.

The First Man and Woman

Genesis 1:26-31; 2:1-7, 18-23

At that time there were no people on

the earth. God wanted to make someone
who was like Him. God put His hand in the
dirt. He picked up a handful of dust, blew on
it, then created a life that was the first man.
God brought all the different kinds of
animals to Adam. “Call them whatever you
want,” God said. So Adam called one a hip-
popotamus, and another a butterfly. Once
Adam had finished, God saw that not one
of the animals was right for being Adam’s
special helper.
So while Adam slept, God took a part of

16
Higher than the Clouds
Genesis 11:5-9

Inside the city was a huge tower. The

people thought they were such good build-
ers, they could make that tower as high as
the sky.
When God saw what the people were
trying to do, He knew He must stop them.
Otherwise they would soon think of
themselves as gods instead of people. They
would be too proud, which is not healthy.
So He mixed up their language.
The people no longer spoke one lan-
guage, but many. If one man said “Hello,”
the other man did not know what he had
said. It was hard to get anything done, let
alone finish a great tower!
The city they never finished building
was called Babel. This meant “Confused,”
because there the Lord confused the lan-
guage of the whole world.

On the Way to Sodom
Genesis 18:1-33

A short time later, Abraham had three

visitors. Abraham knew that one of the
men was really the Lord. He walked with
the three to a hill. From there they could
look down at the city of Sodom.
The Lord said, “I have heard how terri-
bly evil the people are who live in Sodom.
If it is true, then I will destroy that place.”
The two men who had traveled with the
Lord were really angels in disguise. They
set off for Sodom.
Abraham wanted very much to ask the
Lord a question, but did he dare? He knew,
though, that the Lord was his Friend, as
well as his God. So he swallowed hard.
“Lord, what if there are fifty good people
in Sodom? What will hap-
pen to them?

20
“I will not harm the city if there are still
fifty good people.”
Then Abraham asked again and again,
each time using smaller numbers, would
God spare the city for forty-five good
people, for forty, thirty, twenty, or for ten?
Each time the Lord said yes.

Lot Is Rescued
Genesis 19:1-29

There were not ten good people in So-

dom, but four. The only bright spot in the
evil city of Sodom was a man named Lot.
Lot was Abraham’s nephew. He lived in
Sodom with his wife and two daughters.
Lot met the angels, who were disguised
as men. “Come to my house. There you
will be safe from the mean people here.”
The people of Sodom tried to hurt the
angels, though. The angels told Lot, “You
must come with us. The Lord cannot stand
this bad place. He’s going to destroy it! We
will help you run away, but you must not
look back!”
Just a few hours later, the Lord rained
fire onto Sodom. Lot and his family were
safe, but Lot’s wife looked back to watch.
Instantly she became a tall stone!
God had kept His promise to Abraham.
He took care of the good people in Sodom.

Twin Brothers
Genesis 25:22-26

Isaac and Rebekah were married and

lived happily together. But as the years
went by they still did not have a little boy
or girl. Rebekah and Isaac waited and
waited until finally, Isaac prayed to God,
asking Him to make it possible for Re-
bekah to have a baby.
A short time later, God answered Isaac’s
prayer, but not in the way he expected.
There was not one baby growing inside
Rebekah, but two! Twins!
The babies got bigger and bigger. Re-
bekah could often feel their little feet push-
ing against her. One night, Rebekah woke
up suddenly. The babies had been kicking
and hitting each other so hard, she hurt
inside. She prayed to God, “Lord, are my
babies all right? If I hurt when they push
and shove, they must hurt, too. Why is this
happening?”
God answered her, “The two boys you
carry will someday become fathers of
whole nations. One people will become
stronger than the other. And the elder son
will do what the younger tells him.”
The time finally came for Rebekah to
have her babies. The eldest, the first one
to come out, was red. All of his little body
was covered with hair. He was named
Esau, which meant “Hairy.”
A few minutes later, his brother was
born. His tiny hand was holding onto
Esau’s foot. So his parents named him
Jacob, which meant “He Grabs the Heel.”

This right was called Esau’s birthright.
Jacob wanted that. So Jacob made a deal
with Esau. “If you’re really so hungry,”
Jacob said, “if you’re really, really hungry,
then sell me your birthright and I’ll give
you some stew.”
Esau hardly heard what his little brother
was mumbling about. Esau was hungry, he
thought his stomach had shrivelled up and
died. He did not care what he had to do,
he wanted food. “Yes, all right, whatever
you say. Give me some stew now!”
“Swear to it first,” Jacob said. So Esau
swore an oath to him, selling his birthright
to Jacob.
