paper assignment entitled “PAST CONTINUOUS”.

The author also wishes to thank the lecturer who has guided in completing this paper

PRELIMINARY

A. Background
Each language must have rules or often we call the term grammar of each, as well as
with English, a lot of rules that must be considered in its use, especially in the field of
writingnya. Therefore, we try to present a paper with the title Past Continuous Tense, from the
many rules of the English language, in addition to fulfilling the tasks of college also aims
hopefully this short article can add our insight about the English language.

DISCUSSION

A. Definition
Past continuous tense is a tense form used to indicate that an action is taking place
for a certain time in the past. This form indicates that the action took place before, was in
progress during, and may continue after (continued after) time or other actions that
occurred in the past.

General understanding past continuous tense sentence is a sentence that states the
events taking place in the past. On the use of Past Continuous Tense verb used must end
with-ing / (Verb + ing). Past Continuous Tense form of time using this type of "TO BE"
(was / were).
 Was to subject: I, she, he, it.
 Were on the subject: you, they, we.

B. Formula Of Past Continuous


This tense generally occurs only in the action of dynamic verb, not stative verb
because in general only dynamic verb has a continuous form.

The verb form of this formula for positive sentences, negative, and interrogative
following examples are as follows:

C. Example Sentence Of Past Continuous


Past Continuous is used to express the following :
1. Stating activities being carried out at a specific time in the past .
For example :
 We were gardening at 7 a.m yesterday
 He was eating at 8 p.m last night
2. Stating activities being carried out when other events occurred in the past .
For example :
 I was cooking when the phone rang
 When the phone rang , I was cooking
 They were chattering when I came
3. Declare two activities / more is going on simultaneously in the past .
Sample sentences include:
 While I was sweeping the floor , my father was watering plants
 At 9 am yesterday , I was baking a cake while my brother was reading a book

A. Conclusion
1. Past continuous tense is a phrase that states events are happening in the past
2. On the use of Past Continuous Tense verb used must end with-ing / (Verb + ing). Past
Continuous Tense form of time using this type of "TO BE" (was / were).

4. Use Past Continuous tense saah only Declare the activities that are being done at a certain
time in the past.
Example:
 We were gardening at 7 a.m yesterday.
B. Suggestion
From the assessment that has been done is expected we would more understand about
tenses in English in this case "Present Perfect Tense". because in English there are rules in
the learning process, especially pronunciation.
The readers and also the authors want to involve themselves in the application of
English in everyday life because English is an international language.
