INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study

Language is a tool for communication between members of the society in

the form of sound symbols and also writing symbols produced by a human.
Language as a means of communication has a primary function as a means of
delivering messages or meaning by someone to others. Basically, language has
certain functions that are used based on one's needs, for example language can use
to express oneself, as a means of communicating, as a means of integrating and
adapting socially in certain circumstances or situations. Knowing that language is
very important, then each country must have its own language.

In this world there are many different languages, for example Indonesia
using indonesian language, Japan using Japanese language, Korea using Korean
and others. One of the most important languages to learn is English, which is an
international language and many people use it when they are abroad. With this
then English is finally included in the subjects in schools, Primary School, Junior
High School and also Senior High School. To master English is very difficult for
non-indigenous people where English is used as a national language, so people
who want to learn English need to master vocabulary in the school.

Vocabulary is a set of words known to a person and is a part of particular

language. A person’s vocabulary is defined as the set of all words the person
understands or any words that the person might use to compose a new sentence.
The addition of one’s vocabulary is generally considered to be an important part
of either the learning process of a language or the development of one’s ability in
a controlled language. In learning English, vocabulary has an important role. The
more vocabulary we have then it will be easier for us to understand the speech or
writing of others in the language and also easier for us to express our thoughts in
the language both orally and writing. Conversely, the less English vocabulary we
have, the harder it will be for us to understand the conversation in writing of other
in English.
The first thing that we must understand in learning English is the reality
that English is a foreign language for us as Indonesians. There are many ways that
can help so that we can communicate using English. Actually learning English
can be done anywhere with various media. Various media that we can use for
example television, radio, mobile phone, magazines and ofcourse one of the most
interesting and easy media to learn English is through music. Music and songs
here play not only as a medium of intertainment, through music and songs every
people can learn how to recite various words well and precisely, also can learn to
know various phrases or terms of language that exist through the song. Almost all
people love music. Music or song is a unity that can not be separated and can be
used as a medium in a learning process. Here the researcher believed that by using
English songs the students can learn english with great fun and make the students
more active in follow the learning process.

Songs can be used as one of the learning media taught in school, since
many people who like to listen to songs then the song can be used during listening
lessons and also writing, with the use of songs as a medium of learning then
students will really enjoy the lesson. Nowadays a lot of western songs have been
created by the western singers, thus the teacher can choose which songs may be
suitable for use as a learning medium that will be brought into the classroom.
With the use of songs can make students easy to learn, students can learn new
vocabulary by playing new songs.

Based on the observations conducted at SMPN 1 Semin there are many

teachers who just do the learning with monotone and this makes students very
bored. Many teachers do not apply any combination of instructional media to
attract students. By seeing the number of students who love western songs and the
number of teachers who do not use the song as a medium of learning, the
researchers focused to see if the song can have an impact and can increase the
vocabulary that is owned by students in learning English.

In this case researcher only focus on researching first graders in SMPN 1

Semin. This school uses the 2006 KTSP as a curriculum, where the curriculum is
an old curriculum, and where the teacher must be more active in giving the
material, this makes the students easily bored especially junior high school
students who are always happy to learn with a fun situation, students easily bored
because they think that English is not important to them. Thus the teacher can use
other media more fun and can make students active in following the lesson, the
book is not the only medium that can be used for learning resources, teachers can
use the media that can improve students' skills in improving vocabulary, for
example by using songs.

Based on interviews conducted on the first grade students at SMPN 1

Semin many students have difficulty in learning English because of their
limitations in ownership and mastery of vocabulary. From interview it was also
known that more than 80% of students prefer listening to songs rather than
ordinary conversations, many of them said that giving the subject matter with
ordinary conversation makes them feel sleepy and very bored. From the interview
also known that they are very easy to memorize English songs in a short time,
they think that the words in the song were easier to remember.

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter is devoted to explaining in more detail and in depth on this
research, which consists of the main topics involved in this thesis.
A. Theoritical Framework
Here will discuss and review the theory relating to research, namely
1. Vocabulary
The relationship between grammar and vocabulary in learning English is
very important, in making an English sentence, vocabulary is very important to
increase the number of words in English. Without knowing the vocabulary we
have nothing to say. Wallace (1982:144) says that “learning vocabulary is a
complex process which requires the ability to recognize the words, remember
them, and to pronounce, spell and use them correctly”. So it is important to
know the meaning of every vocabulary, not just memorize it but everyone should
know how to spell every vocabulary correctly too.

2. Definition of Vocabulary
Vocabulary is words we must know to communicate effectively; words in
speaking (expressive vocabulary) and words in listening or receptive vocabulary
(Neuman and Dwyer, 2009). Expressive vocabulary is the "output" word of the
language, how people express their desires and needs through words shaped into
sentences or phrases, people need to express their thoughts with the right
combination of words, so here the usefulness and role of vocabulary are
important. Expressive vocabulary refers to words that a person can express or
produce, for example, by speaking or writing. In general, receptive vocabulary
appears to develop before expressive vocabulary over the course of early language
development. Receptive vocabulary refers to all the words that can be understood
by a person, including spoken, written, or manually signed words. Receptive
vocabulary is the “input” word of the language, Receptive vocabulary is the
ability to understand verbal (spoken) and nonverbal (written, gestural) language.
Receptive language includes skills such as following directions, understanding
gestures, identifying vocabulary and basic concepts, and answering questions.
