On May 24, 2018, I presented to the 4th period AP psychology class through a 15-minute
presentation on the research and the data collection conducted this year. The slides covered
background information and specific important facts from the original research paper, but also
included an overview of the data collection methods graphs of the data collected. I explained the
research I found and analyzed the data in relation to my hypothesis. There was a little bit of an
interactive aspects because I asked questions about certain slides before revealing the bullet
points on them. For example, before the slide about the basis of therapy for eating disorders, I
asked the class what they think about when they hear the word “therapy”. I got a couple people
to respond, one of which said, “exercises to strengthen your muscles again.” However, there
were not a ton of people who raised their hands to answer, and overall, the audience was very
quiet. It might have been because the presentation was right after a really long assembly that they
all had sat through for the last two hours. However, I did get a lot more questions and comments
about my research at the end of the presentation, including from the class teacher, Mr.
Napolitano. One question that I received, which I think would be good to include in the
presentation if I were to present it again, was how I chose this topic. I said that I was a dancer,
but the class wanted to know how I came across such a rare topic and how I was connected
personally to the research.
After the presentation, I asked all the students to complete the evaluation form so that I
could receive comments back for improvement. According to the responses, the information
presented was excellent or very good, as well as my knowledge on the topic. Their expectations
were very well met regarding what they learned throughout and how much they knew
afterwards. There was one person who said that the presentation delivery and the
visuals/handouts were “fair”, which was the lowest rating in the all the responses. However, they
clarified later that there wasn’t a lot other than the slides that the audience could interact with,
and the overall presentation was very long. The consensus, based on the responses, was that the
overall presentation was excellent or very good, and that they would definitely or most likely
recommend this program to others.
Through the comment questions at the end, the audience mentioned that the presentation
was helpful because it was very informative, clear, and interesting. They said that the presenter
knew the information and was able to communicate it very well. The comments about what
could be improved were also very positive. Most of the responses said that the presentation did
not have anything to improve or what very good. However, there were a couple that mentioned
that the presentation was too long and that where was some information that was repeated. If I
present this information again, I will make the presentation shorter and take out some of the
information because I also recognized that there was a lot of slides and information that were not
exactly necessary.
Overall, I feel that the presentation went really well. I have improved a lot with my
confidence with presenting and public speaking since the beginning of the year. In addition, I
think that the audience received and understood the information really well and were able to ask
questions about the presentation afterwards. They seemed interested in what I was sharing and
thought that the slides covered all the necessary details of the research. I am glad that I got the
chance to present this information to spread awareness to adolescents about eating disorder
treatment and the new method that I am proposing through my research project.
