Instructional Materials & Media [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]
Blendspace (Technology), envelopes, photographs, shovels, various brushes
Learning-Teaching Methods [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]
Child centered (hands-on), Cooperative Learning¸ Stimulation, Discovery, Interesting, Gain attention
Teaching Activities [ASSURE (Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials and Require Learner Participation)]
In this activity, children dig like little archaeologists. Firstly, they investigate photos, make discussion about them and
teacher shows them video of real dig process by using Youtube. After that, with the phone call that teacher prepares like
one archaeologist call the class, children dig and find some materials. They group them and there is a problem. There are
missing materials. Children make those materials together for archaeologist. For this activity, teacher prepares online class
by using Blendspace in order to use after activity as an assessment.

Individual Learning Activities Children dig the soil individually and they found different
objects. In addition, each child cleans the object they have
found by using brush.

Group Learning Activities Children make brainstorm together to guess what is inside of
the envelope. Children group objects together and they find
missing ones. They make those materials themselves for
archaeologist.
Summary
After breakfast, the teacher enters the class with the children. There are large envelopes in place to attract children's
attention. The teacher gives a few minutes for the children to notice the envelopes on the ground. If the children do not
notice the envelopes on the floor, the teacher calls out to the children. “Children let's look around. There are too many
large envelopes on the ground. Did you notice that?” After the children notice the envelopes on the floor, the teacher asks
what they might be or what will come out of them. The kids brainstorm and say their guesses. After listening to the
teacher's answers, the teacher says “Biz çalışkan arılarız. Vızır vızır vızırdarız. Etkinlik zamanı gelince masalara geçeriz.”
Later, the children start to open the envelopes on their hands. Various images come out of these envelopes like various
historical artifacts, previously used items, excavation areas. After the children, have investigated these pictures, the
teacher starts discussion about what they might be. The teacher talks with children about where these photos might have
been taken, what people in the photo did etc. Comments from children, their opinions are carefully listened. Children are
expected to tell that they are old materials, and that people used to live in places. That is, the children are predicting who
might have lived before. The purpose here is to direct the children to think and to brainstorm so true answers is not
necessary. The teacher says that some of the objects and structures in this photo are historical artifacts. Teacher asks
question to children about what is historical artifacts or have you ever heard it before. Along with comments from the
children, the teacher gives a little explanation of what historical artifacts mean. The teacher says “The historical artifact is
the general name given to the remains and works from people who lived in ancient times.” After this explanation, teacher
ask question to children. “Do you ever think where people find these historical works? Children are expected to say under
the soil with help from the pictures in front of them because the majority of these photographs involve historical artifacts
are on the ground or in the soil. Then the teacher asks questions again. For example, teacher asks “Who removes them
from the soil? Is there a profession that does this job? What is called the part of this kind of excavation?” Children's
estimates are listened. Their interpretation is very important here because the teacher can see what they know or not
know. After the comments are received, if the correct answer is found, it is confirmed. If there is no correct answer, the
teacher explains to children what archeology is and what people doing this job are called. Teacher explains like that
“Archeology is a science that examines material remnants such as tools, home furnishings and artworks of people living in
ancient times.” Then add that “Archaeologist is an expert who carefully reveals every work under the soil that made by
people in ancient times, explore, explain and interpret them with his knowledge.” During explanation of these, teacher
displays related photographs like excavation area, archaeologist. After this process, teacher shows them video of real dig
process by using Youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrj9xm_NDyI ). At this point, teacher’s phone rings and
starts talking confusedly. After the phone is turned off, the teacher whispers and speaks to the children. Teacher says
excitingly “They just called me and they said they saw some buried historical artifacts in the garden of my school. They
want us to find them. Now it's time for all of us to become archaeologists!” Teacher goes to garden with children. When
they went to the garden a certain soil area was determined with tapes. The teacher asks the children where to dig. If the
children do not notice the banded area, the teacher says to the children, "Look, someone digs around the excavation area
with bands so we can see" and direct this way. After the children arrive at the excavation site, the teacher gives each child
a shovel to dig soil and gives a variety of bristles to carefully remove these historical artifacts. After they get the supplies,
the children start digging the soil. Under the soil there are various dishes, spoons, forks, fabric pieces. During the
excavation, the teacher looks at what the children are doing, keeps a note of how they make the digits, or speaks to them
about what they found. Children carefully collect and clean the objects they come out from under the soil with a brush and
put them in a clean place. Then they talk about what these objects are and who might have used them. Then children
group objects that are the same like plates together, spoons together. After the grouping process, they realize that there is
a problem. There are missing materials. Children make those materials together for archaeologist and assessment part
starts.

Measurement & Evaluation

Teacher prepares online class by using Blendspace in order to use after activity as an assessment.
In order to make an assessment, teacher prepares online class by using Blendspace. With this tool, teacher makes both
assessment and involvement for parents. Teacher puts videos and pictures as a reminder of activity for both parents and
students. Also, teacher puts quiz to see children’s learning clearly.
1. Descriptive Question:
Which materials did we use in the excavation work?
Where have we reviewed the photos of today?
What kind of amenities did we find in the area we excavated?
2. Sensual Question:
What did you feel when you were excavating as an archaeologist?
What did you feel when you found the objects during the excavation?
3. Daily Life Question:
Have you ever gone to an excavated site?
Have you ever seen historical artifacts in the museum?
4. Objectives Question:
Were the items you found old or new?
How we grouped the objects?
Are there any differences between them?

Measurement & Assessment Activities for Teacher asks questions to each child sensual questions to learn
Individual Performance their individual emotions about the activity process. Also teacher
asks daily life questions individually to learn experience of each
child.

Measurement & Assessment Activities for Teacher ask descriptive questions to whole class to measure
Group Performance their knowledge about the activity. Also teacher asks objective
questions to learn whether or not children get objectives.

Explanation regarding to the implementation of the plan

If there is a problem e-mail system of teacher because of internet outage, teacher cannot send the online class to parents.
In this situation, teacher can give online class as a written document/worksheet to children. Written
documents/worksheets are expected to complete by children and parents together.
